The RBK website quoted a local priest as saying the attacker opened fire as worshippers were leaving an afternoon service.

The gunman was shot and killed, according to local reports. Four people were killed outside the church and one died later at the hospital.

Five others, including a police officer and a national guardsman, were injured, Russian officials said. The gunman, who was carrying a hunting rifle, bullets and a knife, was killed.

The Islamic State extremist group claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement issued by the group's Amaq information agency.

A shooting in Russia's southern republic of Dagestan has left 5 women dead and at least 4 people wounded.

Nancy Pelosi Sets Record For Longest Continuous Speech In House History
As of this writing she is still refusing to support funding of the federal government until the immigration issue is resolved. The Senate and the House were both expected to vote on the proposed deal on Thursday. "It won't pass in the House".

A spokesman for Russian Orthodox Patriarch Kirill strongly condemned the attack, branding it a "monstrous crime" aimed at "provoking a confrontation between Orthodox Christians and Muslims" in the North Caucasus. "He is a local resident of 22 years of age".

Next to his corpse lay two of his victims, covered in a white shroud.

No immediate motive for the shooting was revealed. Following two separatist wars in neighboring Chechnya, an Islamist insurgency spread to Dagestan.

Russian President Vladimir Putin fired, three months ago, head of Dagestan Ramazan Abdulatipov and appointed Vladimir Vasilyev.
