Syria war death toll rises; Hospitals bombed in eastern Ghouta

French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday called for a truce in Syria's eastern Ghouta district to facilitate evacuation of civilians and access to humanitarian aid in the rebel-held enclave.

In what is termed as one of the heaviest bombardments in the seven years of Syrian civil war, more than 60 children have reportedly lost their lives, according to BBC. More than 1,200 people have been injured.

There have been daily reports about civilians being killed and others being severely wounded, in addition to warehouses, hospitals and schools being damaged or destroyed.

The ICRC, which provides humanitarian aid to residents across Syria affected by the conflict, has not received permission from the government to send aid into the besieged East Ghouta suburbs since mid-November, the organization said in a statement published on Wednesday.

"Where is the worldwide community, where is (the UN) Security Council... they abandoned us".

"In (eastern) Ghouta, we have observed Russian aircraft participating", said Mohammad Alloush, the political chief of Jaish al-Islam, one of the main rebel factions in the enclave.

But Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's veto-wielding ally Russian Federation has called the proposal "not realistic".

Alcohol is now the sixth most common cause of disability among people in their 50s and 60s, up from 16th in 1990. The nationwide observational study used data from the French National Hospital Discharge database.

The al-Nusra Front terrorists, he said, are hampering the evacuation of civilians from Eastern Ghouta, where they use them as "human shields" while keeping up attacks on Damascus' civil facilities.

The medical personnel in Eastern Ghouta can't cope with the high number of injuries. "But people think we are numbers".

Meanwhile, there are reports of shelling from Eastern Ghouta on Damascus, the statement said.

The UN has described the situation as "beyond imagination", while Amnesty International said "flagrant war crimes" were being committed.

Some Syrians feared more violence Tuesday after government forces bombarded East Ghouta over a two-day period, killing more than 150 civilians.

"The Arbin hospital was hit twice today and is now out of service", said Mousa Naffa, country director in Jordan for the Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS), which supported the clinic. "I know that very important consultations are taking place in this Council, aiming at a cessation of hostilities during one month in Syria, with a number of conditions, and of course I fully support that effort, but I believe eastern Ghouta can not wait".

Eastern Ghouta falls within a network of de-escalation zones endorsed by Turkey, Russia and Iran in which acts of aggression are expressly prohibited.
