The sheriff said that the number of school threats has increased since the attack in Parkland, Florida. The teenager was arrested on suspicion of making criminal threats. The student allegedly continued to make threats, telling Chavez that he would carry out the shooting in three weeks, according to Jacobsen.

He had apparently been angry a teacher told him he could not wear headphones in the classroom, the guard said.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said they raced to prevent just such an incident Friday, acting on a tip from a security officer at El Camino High School in Whittier, southeast of Los Angeles. Police say the boy planned to harm specific students. He described El Camino as a small, alternative school, with more than 200 students enrolled.

Chavez chose to approach the teen.

"He did say he was kidding and did not mean it", Chavez said.

An Oregon high school student was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of disorderly conduct after police say he sent a social media message to a girl at another high school reading, "I am the shooter!"

The safety officer questioned the student and brought him to the administration office.

LASD sheriff Jim McDonnell said his department takes seriously threats of violence on school campuses.

Red Cross seeks access to Syria's Ghouta, but fears worse to come
The medical personnel in Eastern Ghouta can't cope with the high number of injuries. "But people think we are numbers". But Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's veto-wielding ally Russian Federation has called the proposal "not realistic".

A few hours after Chavez raised the alarm, Los Angeles County sheriff's investigators found a cache of firearms, including two semiautomatic rifles, two handguns and 90 high-capacity magazines, at his home, reported the Los Angeles Times. They also said he had ammunition and loaded magazines in his room. One of the guns was registered to the teen's 28-year-old brother. School officials said he has an "extensive" disciplinary history at the campus, which is a continuation school, according to the publication. His name was not released because he is a minor.

The sheriff credited "attentive" school resource personnel - in particular the safety officer - as well as "diligent" investigators, with preventing what he said could have been a risky outcome.

McDonnell called Chavez a hero. I'm just doing my job every day.

An alert security officer at a California high school helped thwart what police and school officials often fear after a mass shooting: a copycat incident.

McDonnell said that was the second serious threat at El Camino High School that week.

On February 15, a student who had been suspended told his mother he wanted a school administrator dead.

Barcenas faced multiple charges, including possession of an assault weapon, import of a high-capacity magazine, failure to register a handgun and criminal storage of firearms, the sheriff said. Their home was searched but no weapons were located.

But it said "We regularly review our Emergency plans for each site that includes responses to natural disasters, but also for intruders and threats on campus. If you don't talk to them, someone else will".
