According to the 2020 organising committee, their mascots have opposite personalities but "respect each other and are very good friends".

These blue and pink Japanese mascots will follow in the footsteps of a white tiger named "Soohorang", mascot for the just-completed Pyeongchang Winter Olympics in South Korea. The Mascot has a strong sense of justice, and is very athletic.

But Wenlock and Mandeville, the widely mocked mascots of the 2012 London Games, proved far from Olympic gold.

The island-nation is a champion at both creating anime and mascots. The new Olympic and Paralympic mascots will be seen in merchandise, stadiums and everything that has to do with the event. Although the official Mascot Selection Panel performed the initial processes to short-list the remaining designs, the students had the ultimate say in the winning mascot pairing through voting that took place from December to February 22nd, with no votes being accepted from the general public.

The country of Hello Kitty is known for its love of all things cute and some of its ubiquitous mascot characters enjoy celebrity status, notably Kumamon the red-cheeked bear and Funassyi, a peach with 1.5 million Twitter followers.

The pot-bellied, red-cheeked bear known as Kumamon - created in 2010 to promote Japan's southern Kumamoto region - raked in $8.8 million previous year for local businesses selling branded products.

The designer of the winning mascots is Ryo Taniguchi, who graduated as an art major from Cabrillo College in California, and is now active as a character designer/illustrator.

The Tokyo 2020 organisers threw open the competition of choosing mascots for the quadrennial games to individuals and groups, and 2,042 designs were received.

The Tokyo Olympics are scheduled for July 24 to August 9, 2020.

The mascots' names will be chosen based on feedback from creative professionals and will be announced in the summer.
