Supporters and opponents of mandatory fees that some government employees must pay their unions voiced their arguments Monday outside the U.S. Supreme Court as justices prepared to hear the case.

Audrie Francis, a fourth-year environmental science student and member of Student Labor Advocacy, said they think undergraduate students should pay attention to campus protests on labor issues.

Larson sees the Janus case as just the latest attack on labor organizations.

As the U.S. Supreme Court hears oral arguments today in the anti-union "Janus" case, New York City public school educators say they are sticking with their union.

Given that the Court split 4-4 on the prior Friedrichs case, there is a widespread assumption that the Court's frequently conservative and liberal judges were split. American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees, which will determine whether public-sector unions can collect fees from non-union employees.

Flawed though unions may be, to the extent this state still has a racially and ethnically diverse middle class, it is arguably because of organized labor.

Justice Neil Gorsuch was appointed by President Donald Trump to replace Scalia and Hebert believes he'll stick with his fellow conservatives, which could have some far reaching repercussions. It is very likely that the political strength of Californias public sector unions will diminish if public employees no longer have to pay dues. The question is whether states have the right to allow public employee unions to charge nonmembers fair share agency fees.

"These employees are absolutely the reason we can study here at the top public university", they said. Non-union members do not have to pay full dues, since some of the money might be used to support political beliefs the non-member opposes.

The case is Janus v. AFSCME, Docket No. 16-1466. There has been a shift toward Right to Work in recent years, but the chart below shows that while union membership has plunged in the private sector, it has remained high in state and local governments.

Janus, a child care support specialist who has worked for the state of IL for about 11 years, objects to paying his so-called Hudson Notice fees which are equivalent to about 78% of union dues.

Peter MacKinnon, president of SEIU Local 509 in MA, said if the court sides with Janus it would be a major setback for public-sector unions.

Pro-union speakers said they are not confident of a victory at the Supreme Court, which is ruled by a conservative majority of five justices.

"Probably their goal is to eventually get rid of the unions", Green told WFMZ. The other 27 states allow people the "Right To Work" without unions picking their pockets. ACLU Legal Director David Cole said fair share fees do not violate nonunion workers' rights.

At Monday's rally, Mayor Bill Peduto declared that such a decision would not diminish union power in Pittsburgh.

The current case, however, challenges this reasoning as compelling individuals to fund union activity in violation of their right to free speech.

"The case threatens the existence of unions", he said.
