Toyota is to stop selling diesel-powered passenger cars in the UK and Europe by the end of the year and focus on petrol-electric hybrid offering such as its popular Prius model

Johan van Zyl, President and CEO of Toyota Motor Europe commented: "Toyota has been pioneering Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) technology for more than 20 years".

Last year, nearly 15% of the brand's cars sold in Europe were diesel-powered, while in 2012 their share was 30%.

The 2019 Toyota Corolla hatchback, or Auris in European markets, made its debut on Tuesday at the 2018 Geneva motor show.

Experts have noted that while major European manufacturers spent years betting the house on diesel as their environmentally friendly alternative, Toyota was making itself the industry leader in hybrids, which are powered by a combination of gasoline and electric generators.

A vehicle with the Volkswagen VW logo badge is seen on display at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan, U.S., January 16, 2018. Registrations have become increasingly weighted towards hybrids since 2015, when sales were split evenly between hybrids and diesels.

Toyota said the death of diesel was due to "strong customer demand" for hybrid versions of its cars.

Toyota has pulled the covers off its all-new Auris hatchback at the Geneva motor show, showing the world the auto that will go into production at its Burnaston factory in Derbyshire later this year.

In the UK, Toyota sold 101,692 units past year, of which hybrids made up 45,803 units - equating to 45%, similar to Europe.

For several years, HEV versions have been the dominant powertrain where offered. Meanwhile sales of Toyota's hybrid models have risen sharply. The 120PS 1.8-litre petrol hybrid from the old auto is carried over and offered alongside a new 2.0 petrol hybrid with 177PS.

"In our latest new model, the Toyota C-HR, hybrids accounted for 78% of sales last year".

Japanese automobiles concern Toyota will stop selling diesel cars in Europe.

In commercial vehicles, where personal and business needs (eg torque and payload) remain, Toyota will continue to offer the latest technology diesels, they have confirmed.

Meanwhile, as awareness grows about diesel engines spewing out nitrogen oxide and harmful particulates, diesel sales in Europe are plummeting.
