Beijing protests over US-Taiwan travel Bill

Trump signs bill on Taiwan cooperation defying China’s warnings

US President Donald Trump signed into law legislation that seeks to stimulate visits between officials from Taiwan and the United States, the White House said in a press release.

The White House said Trump had signed the 'Taiwan Travel Act, ' which "encourages visits between officials of the United States and Taiwan at all levels".

He later agreed with President Xi Jinping to honour the so-called one-China policy, under which the United States acknowledges Beijing's position that there is only one China that encompasses Taiwan.

The statement also urged the United States to "stop pursuing any official ties with Taiwan or improving its current relations with Taiwan in any substantive way".

In a paper co-authored by think tank Project 2049 Institute's Ian Easton and Mark Stokes, Armitage made key policy recommendations for U.S. -Taiwan relations, one of which is that Trump and Tsai should have a face-to-face meeting.

The bill, which was passed by Congress last month, says it should be US policy to allow visits at all levels.

Japanese Trade Minister Hiroshige Seko said he had expressed concern to Mr Lighthizer and warned of major market disruption. The U.S. bought 5 percent of Japan's steel a year ago but just 1.1 percent of China's steel.

The Taiwan Travel Act will allow unrestricted two-way travel for officials from the United States and Taiwan, thus restoring direct official USA contacts with the self-ruled island, which were cut in 1979 when Washington switched diplomatic recognition from Taipei to Beijing.

It would also have far greater implications for the U.S., Taiwan and China than the phone call between Tsai and Trump Dec. 2, 2016, when the latter was still president-elect, which made headlines around the world.

The legislation aims to encourage mutual visits between USA and Taiwanese officials at all levels.

Douglas Paal, who served as US representative to Taiwan from 2002 to 2006, said the legislation did not change anything real as it was non-binding.

It suspects Tsai wants to push for formal independence, which would cross a red line for Communist Party leaders in Beijing, though Tsai has said she wants to maintain the status quo and is committed to ensuring peace. United States administrations already had discretionary authority to permit visits by senior Taiwanese officials and visits by senior U.S. officials and military officers to Taiwan, he said.

Taiwan has been governed separately from mainland China since a civil war in 1949 led to a split.
