Their upset, evidenced by the score, came convincingly, and UMBC throttled a team that many expected to compete for a national title. UMBC scored 53 points after the half and dealt the Cavaliers by far their largest loss of the season. After senior-guard Jourdan Grant made a three-point shot with 12:12 left in the half, the team gained confidence, taking their first lead just two minutes later on a three-pointer by sophomore-forward Arkel Lamar.

That Virginia team lost the top spot after a December 1982 loss to NAIA team Chaminade in what many have considered the biggest upset in college sports. But that was the regular season.

"Unbelievable - it's really all you can say", UMBC coach Ryan Odom said.

And perhaps the least shocking part of this entire night is that it was Virginia that did it, that the one program known for collapsing in March more than anyone else found a way to ensure that their names will never be erased from the record books, that they will forever and always be associated with the Dark Art Of Choking. The UMBC Retrievers will forever be in the history books after beating the University of Virginia Cavaliers 74-54.

He diced up Virginia's defense in the second half, getting the hole easily on six different occasions and making easy layups.

UMBC connected on 12 of 24 3-pointers, good for 50 percent.

UMBC took a 21-21 halftime tie and used a 7-1 run at the start of the second half to not only take a lead, but cause Virginia to feel the full pressure of the moment, pressure the Cavaliers - playing without sixth man and key cog DeAndre Hunter - were not prepared to endure. Lyles was fouled on a 3-point shot and suddenly the Retrievers led by 16.

UMBC To Face Off Against Virginia In NCAA Tournament
University of Maryland Baltimore County will take on No. 1 Virginia in the NCAA Tournament Friday, snapping a 10-year drought. There is expected to be a slight tweak to the format as the teams and seedings will be announced before the actual bracket .

Chants of "UMBC" echoed through the arena.

"It's insane man, we're the first 16 seed to beat a one seed, and to have the UMBC community behind us means the world to me", said Grant.

The magnitude of this win for UMBC can't be understated. Elida graduate Dakota Mathias finished with eight points, four rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals for the second-seeded Boilermakers (29-6), who will play Butler on Sunday. But the win by the Retrievers - who needed a buzzer-beater to upset Vermont in the America East Tournament - highlighted changes in college hoops that have shrunk the mythical gap between 16s and 1s. However, Kansas State's defensive intensity may prove too much for UMBC to handle.

Conner Frankamp scored 27 points for Wichita State (25-8). "Kansas State won, right?" No. 13-seed Marshall knocked off No. 4-seed Wichita State as a 13.5-point underdog. One team was the ACC champion, AP #1 and #1 seed.

The lead would quickly increase to 11 as Sherburne hit a three pointer. The Wolf Pack came back again after trailing by five early in an overtime session that featured 34 combined points.

Kerwin Roach had 26 points for Texas (19-15) and shot 6 of 10 from 3-point range.

The University of Maryland, Baltimore County made history Friday night in the NCAA tournament and the Retrievers did so with a strong local flavor in the runaway win over the University of Virginia.
