Package Bomb Explodes at Schertz Facility

Austin bomber identified as Mark Conditt source says

While the first three bombings all occurred east of Interstate 35, a section of town that tends to be more heavily minority and less affluent, the tripwire blast was west of the highway and the FedEx package explosion was in Schertz, about 20 miles northeast of San Antonio.

One of the wounded is a member of the city's Hispanic community, thus furthering the idea in some minds that the serial bomber is motivated by racial hatred.

The explosion came just hours after police made a direct public appeal to the person or persons who carried out the previous bombings to come forward.

McCaul said he was briefed by the FBI, ATF and Austin police on the situation and added that he hoped the bomber's "biggest mistake was going through FedEx".

How did the bombings start?

An employee at the FedEx center in Austin says managers ordered workers outside before sunrise after a suspicious package showed up.

The string of attacks began on March 2nd when 39-year-old Stephen House was killed when he picked up a package left at his doorstep. The city is on high alert after four package explosions in three weeks. All of the cardboard packages were hand-delivered, not sent through the mail, and the bombs were built with household items available at hardware stores.

Texas suffered another explosive attack late on Sunday night following four others this month.

Free ice cream at Dairy Queen locations Tuesday
Dairy Queen said it raised $300,000 for the charity on the same day previous year . Free cones will be available during regular business hours all day long.

At a later presser, SAPD Chief William McManus confirmed two packages were found at the facility, but could not go into any other details about it.

"Successful serial murderers are determined, adaptable and cognisant of their surroundings, which allows them to learn from their mistakes, improve their abilities and implement new tactics to remain steps ahead of those searching for them", said Enzo Yaksic, co-director of Northeastern University's Atypical Homicide Research Group.

If one perpetrator is behind the four Austin bombs and the device in Schertz, then the person deployed an unusually wide range of skills and delivery methods, CNN law enforcement analyst James Gagliano said. It could have maimed any passer-by, police said.

"I will reach out to the suspect or suspects and ask that you contact us... communicate with us so that we can put this to an end", Manley said.

Police and federal agents said Sunday night's blast triggered along a street by a almost invisible tripwire suggests a "higher level of sophistication" than they have seen before in three early package bombs left on doorsteps, and means the carnage is now random, rather than targeted at someone in particular. This is because the bomb was activated by a tripwire set alongside a roadway.

Originally, authorities thought the attacks were the result of hate crimes, but the socioeconomic diversity of the ensuing victims now leads them to believe the attacks are random. Instead, this bomb was left on the side of the road in the upscale Travis Country neighborhood of southwest Austin.

Authorities said the package exploded while on a conveyor belt.

Schertz police Chief Michael Hansen said at a news conference that one worker reported feeling ringing in her ears after the early Tuesday blast, but she was treated and released.
