Australian coach Darren Lehmann (L) Captain Steve Smith (C) and vice captain David Warner (R).

CA alleges Warner was exclusively responsible for the "development of a plan to attempt to artificially alter the condition of the ball", instructing "a junior player to carry out a plan", and providing "advice to a junior player regarding how a ball could be artificially altered, including demonstrating how it could be done".

They then allegedly "misled match officials through the concealment of his knowledge and involvement in the plan".

"I think they're very sad and remorseful", Sutherland said.

The next 12 months will continue a busy list of commitments for Australia, according to the International Cricket Council's (ICC) future tours programme, not least a mouth-watering match-up with India, including the traditional Boxing Day test in Melbourne and equally well-attended New Year's affair in Sydney.

"The players are remorseful for the mistakes they have made". We love all of our players and they are going through a really tough time.

The tainted trio has been suspended while Darren Lehmann has been given a clean chit by CA COE James Sutherland in a press conference on Tuesday.

Wicketkeeper Tim Paine will take over the captaincy for the fourth and final Test starting in Johannesburg on Friday, with hosts South Africa leading a bad-tempered series 2-1.

Warner had captained the side from 2015 and had taken them to the title in 2016.

In addition, both Smith and Warner have been barred from captaining Australia for a period of two years.

Warner's IPL team SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) had announced on Wednesday that he would not lead the side and a replacement would be named soon.

Steve Smith and David Warner both have been handed 12-month bans, while Cameron Bancroft has been banned for nine months.

"The CoA, in consultation with BCCI Acting President Mr CK Khanna, IPL Chairman Mr Rajeev Shukla and BCCI Acting Hon". CA's sanction paved the way for the BCCI to ban the duo.

The 28-year-old Smith will not be allowed to captain Australia for two years and Warner will never be allowed to hold a leadership position in Australian cricket again.

Smith was merely found to have "knowledge of a plan to artificially alter the condition of the ball".

A key finding was that Bancroft had in fact used sandpaper to rough up the ball in the third test at Newlands, and not sticky tape as he stated, adding an extra element of premeditation to the actions and re-opening questions as to whether this was an isolated incident.

Lehmann, who has been cleared of any involvement in the plot which led to Bancroft using sandpaper to scratch the surface of the ball before hiding the evidence down his pants, told reporters that the three players are "not bad people".

The three players have been suspended from "all worldwide and domestic cricket", but Australia's governing body for the sport said they will be permitted to play club games and "will be encouraged to do so to maintain links with the cricket community".

But Indian touring teams have traditionally struggled Down Under and any claims India have to being the best would be severely tested on the Australian wickets.

"Clearly we are not at all comfortable with what has taken place".
