A Detroit man who was set to be deported on Tuesday night escaped custody at New York's JFK International Airport.

The prisoner's handcuffs were removed while the agents took him through X-Ray screening. Mohamadou Lamine Mbacke, 31, who was being deported to Senegal on a prior weapons arrest, apparently ran away from the agents in Terminal 4, at Gate B23, at around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday.

"An individual being transported by federal immigration officials at JFK Airport [Tuesday] night eluded custody during transfer to a connecting flight", The Port Authority of NY and New Jersey said.

Port Authority officers were notified about the escape 45 minutes after it occurred.

The report said that these deportations have not been getting much attention because Trump's immigration focus has been on building a wall with Mexico and deporting Latin American immigrants.

"Mbacke is described as being 6'3" tall and weighs approximately 190 pounds. He was last seen wearing either a black or purple shirt, jeans and a pair of sneakers.

Officials say they caught the man on surveillance video climbing into a taxi.

Federal and local agents are searching for him, and members of the public should not try to apprehend him.
