As part of re-organisation, the company also announced that senior executive Terry Myerson, who joined Microsoft 21 years ago and was heading the Windows division, is leaving the company.

Microsoft is reorganizing into two main divisions, with one focused on experiences and devices and another on cloud and AI platforms, the company announced Thursday.

Moving forward, the executive VP of the Office Product Group Rajesh Jha will expand his existing responsibilities to lead a new team focused on Experiences & Devices. The new setup aims to leverage Microsoft's strongest businesses, like its Azure cloud service and Office 365 subscription software, while Windows gets deemphasized.

Windows 10 has been adopted by almost 700 million users, the outgoing Windows chief Terry Myerson inadvertently revealed. When it comes to AI perception and Mixed Reality (MR), Alex Kipman will lead the new team.

As per a CNBC report, Satya Nadella, the CEO of Microsoft shared the announcements and the changes with his team via a long email. Myerson said that the commercial usage of the latest Windows version has also improved 84% year over year. "He will work with me on the transition over the coming months", Nadella said. In fact, Windows is something that it is hoping to move to cloud for a while, something evident from Windows 10 that differs significantly compared to older operating system versions like Windows 7. Microsoft Store data still says that there are more than 600 million active devices using Windows 10. Within this engineering team, Jason Zander will serve as executive vice president of Azure. Still, under Nadella, who took over in 2014, the company has stayed relevant and boosted sales by focusing on cloud services and subscription versions of its popular work tools. One team will focus on the cloud and AI, the other on what it calls "experiences and devices". Zander is also inheriting the Windows platform team to help create a more "unified distributed computing infrastructure and application model".

Harry Shum will continue to lead Microsoft's third engineering team, which focuses on A.I. and research and was established in 2016, Nadella said.

Nadella shared the news in an email to employees.
