NEWS Water slide designer arrested at DFW Airport

The 10-year-old boy was killed almost two years ago while riding on Schlitterbahn Waterpark's "Verruckt", a 168-foot water slide designed by Schooley.

U.S. Marshals took John Schooley into custody at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport after his flight from China touched down, the U.S. Marshals Service announced.

Both were recently charged with reckless second-degree murder in the decapitation of a 10-year-old boy on the ride in 2016.

Caleb Schwab was killed on the 17-story Verruckt in 2016 when the raft he was riding went airborne and hit an overhead loop.

A grand jury earlier indicted the park's former director of operations, Tyler Miles, and the park itself in the boy's death.

They also were charged with 17 other felonies, including aggravated battery and aggravated endangerment of a child counts tied to injuries other riders sustained on the giant slide, called Verruckt, which is German for "insane".

Miles has been released on $50,000 bond, according to one of his attorneys, Tricia Bath.

Henry was arrested last weekn in Texas ans waived extradition to Kansas. The "rushed project and lack of expertise" resulted in the company skipping "fundamental steps in the design process". He said Schlitterbahn "is a family water park, but this isn't a family ride".

'In fact, the design and operation of the Verruckt complied with few, if any, of the industry safety standards, ' the indictment says.

During the ride's 182 days in operation, 13 injuries were reported, including two concussions.

Nevertheless, Schooley was responsible for doing "the math" that went into the slide's design.

The two other women he was riding with were also seriously injured, one suffered a fractured jaw bone while the other had an orbital bone fracture. "These experts noted that Verruckt's design violated almost all aspects" of longstanding industry safety standards.

But an indictment filed last month against the 72-year-old suspect found he "possessed no engineering credential relevant to amusement ride design or safety".

The Schwab family reached settlements of almost $20 million with Schlitterbahn and various companies associated with the design and construction of the waterslide.

In a statement last week, Schlitterbahn defended its safety record and said: "Every attraction, from kiddie slide to uphill water coasters undergoes an internal and an independent third party inspection prior to the start of the season".

"If we actually knew how to do this, and it could be done that easily, it wouldn't be that spectacular", Schooley allegedly said, according to the indictment.
