One of them escaped by posing as a Muslim from Bangladesh, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj had said in a statement in Rajya Sabha.

The remains of the 38 men reached the country on Monday almost four years after they went missing and were identified through DNA and forensic tests.

Minister for State for External Affairs, V K Singh would return with the mortal remains of 39 Indians killed by the Islamic State in Iraq on Monday. "For verification of bodies, the DNA samples of their relatives were sent there and four state governments - Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, West Bengal and Bihar - were involved in this", she had further said.

Among the 39 Indians, most were from different places in Punjab like Amritsar, Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala and Jalandhar.

The mortal remains were brought to India in a special aircraft.

He said the workers had found work in Iraq through illegal agents, and this compounded the problem for the Indian government to carry out a search for them. "None of the 40 workers had a record with the Embassy of India because they went via illegal agents", Singh said.

"Once the embassy had been informed about them, they can not say that they did not have a record". One member from each of the family would be given a government job in Punjab.

When asked if the kin of all the deceased will be given Government jobs, Gen VK Singh said, "This is not a game of football". The Indian government maintained that they were alive and safe, assuring that search operations were underway.

Iraq's anti-terrorism law empowers courts to convict people who are believed to have helped IS even if they are not accused of carrying out attacks. He also made it clear that the Punjab Government in collaboration with the Union Government would take stringent action against the travel agents sending youth overseas by unfair means.

Shyam Kumar Kushwaha, a family member of Adalat Singh, told ANI, "He has a wife, little children and parents at home, and the family needs to be compensated adequately".
