US added modest 103K jobs in March rate stays 4.1 pct

Figures released by the Labor Department on Friday showed that non-farm payrolls increased by 103,000 jobs last month.

The result was less than a third of the payroll gains in February and far lower than the 175,000 analysts expected.

The U.S. economy marked its 90th consecutive month of job growth in March, but the U.S. added fewer jobs than had been expected, with a net gain of only 103,000.

This is published unedited from the PTI feed. The number of jobs increased by 326,000 in February, 13,000 more than previously reported.

Meanwhile, the Labor Department said the annual rate of growth in average hourly employee earnings accelerated to 2.7 percent in March from 2.6 percent in February.

Condom-snorting challenge latest fad to go viral online in America
The trend isn't new - the first example of the condom challenge is from 2012- but it appears to be experiencing a resurgence. The video has since been removed, but there are still dozens of others showing teenagers accepting the challenge.

The jobs numbers are closely watched by Federal Reserve policymakers. For black Americans, the unemployment rate was 6.9 percent; it was 3.6 percent for white workers.

With labor market slack diminishing, wage growth picked up a bit in March.

There is hope that wage growth will accelerate in the second half of the year and allow the USA central bank to continue raising interest rates. The gain lifted the annual increase in average hourly earnings to 2.7 percent from 2.6 percent in February.

That was a slight acceleration from the previous month, but still below the rate of increase when the unemployment rate was last at this level. Workers unemployed for less than 14 weeks decreased by 118,000, while the number of long-term unemployed, those jobless for 27 weeks or more, fell by 75,000 and accounted for 20.3% of the unemployed. Economists did not see an impact on hiring in the near-term from a recent stock market selloff, which has caused a tightening in financial conditions. They can't afford multiple months of below-expectation job growth.
