Backseat for feminism? Russia looks to revive F1 ‘grid girls’ for Sochi grand prix

The picture-story was in support of the Monaco and Russian Grands Prix indicating they plan to defy Formula One's decision to use "grid kids" instead of girls this year. "And besides our girls are the most lovely". They'll be there, on the grid, but won't be holding any name-boards.

Monaco's move comes after the Russian deputy prime minister Dmitry Kozak, who heads the Russian Grand Prix organising committee, said he thought it was "wrong" to bring children onto the track because they would be "scared".

"Here it should be adults. In all forms of motor sport there are girls advertising cars harmoniously and pleasantly".

While one part-time "grid girl", Charlotte Gash, told BBC Radio 5 live she was "disgusted" with F1's "politically correct" decision.

The girls were controversially abolished in the country earlier this year after F1 chiefs said they were at odds with modern "societal norms". Their role has been given to so-called "grid kids", young drivers from local motorsport clubs.

Martin Luther King Jr. on the 50 year anniversary of his death
Throughout his life, King introduced a non-violent approach to civil rights that differed from other movements at the time. King's legacy of active participation in our democracy", NAACP President Derrick Johnson said in a statement.

In Russia also the girls will be present.

"Our American friends assume it hurts female feelings, but our hostesses go to modelling and PR schools and they're paid well".

"They're lovely, and the cameras will be on them once again".

F1's new United States owners Liberty Media said in January the practice of using grid girls - paid models in uniform - wasn't "appropriate or relevant" anymore.

When F1 chose to replace grid girls, I certainly didn't think it would end sexism in racing. Even with all of that, it's especially discouraging to see high level racing officials not only asking to ignore the decision but reducing women as something pretty to perform for them and the cameras.
