Masters champion Patrick Reed confronts negative headlines

Patrick Reed ended Sunday wearing the green jacket after winning the Masters at Augusta

Perhaps it was just a matter of time, then, before the 27-year-old veteran from Texas captured his first major. "I am who I am".

Woods started with bogeys on the first two holes, but he birdied 6 and 8 to get back to even-par.

But while the golfer's parents Jeannette and Bill live in Augusta, they were not at the course to see their son's triumph.

The most notable aspect of his immediate post round celebration wasn't who was there - his wife Justine, a regular on Tour, was the first to greet him with a kiss - but who wasn't there.

In two Ryder Cup appearances, Reed has won six of his nine matches. The victor of the Masters' green jacket - not to mention the $1.98-million prize for first place - was American Patrick Reed, who shot 15-under par to beat Rickie Fowler by one stroke.

Spieth said: "With eight people ahead of me starting the day, to get that much help and shoot a fantastic round was almost impossible". I really did. I missed playing out here. "Not only did it fuel my fire a little bit, but also it just takes the pressure off of me and adds it back to him". For one thing, Thursday and Friday were up 40 and 55 percent, respectively, on ESPN, while Saturday and Sunday were up only 24 and 14 percent on CBS, suggesting that his presence did make a large difference.

After Patrick Reed captured the title, Stokke, 29, a track and field star, took to Instagram to praise her beau's performance at Augusta.

Reed has been labeled a villain in golf because of a complicated past that has included allegations of cheating and stealing, two underage-drinking arrests, and reports that he has an abrasive personality.

But for one last time, Reed played four flawless golf shots - hitting the fairway and green before two-putting to secure his triumph. The new clubs helped him have three consecutive top-10 finishes entering the Masters, including a runner-up at the Valspar Championship. Bet I can hit it closer to the pin, said the devil. You know, I stand by my comments. It was possibly the highest score I could have shot today. "They're just chapters in my life". Patrick Reed told everybody who would listen to him when he first burst on the scene that he had enough game to win a major. Why don't you ask them?

On it being the hardest round of golf mentally he's played. In five years on the PGA Tour, he had only five victories.

Masters golf champion Patrick Reed gets some make-up before his CNBC television interview on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange.

"Humility was not one of his strong suits early on".

Earlier in the day Reed took his green jacket on a tour of NY, visiting the Stock Exchange and taking selfies on top of the third-highest building in the city.

The question is whether that translates to more victories, and more majors.

There's certainly no glass ceiling to the American's ambitions. It will hurt. I still believe McIlroy is the most talented golfer on the planet, but he needs now to show consistent form over the next couple of years if he is going to be spoken of in the same breath as Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus in the history books.

This week was different. Clinging to a one-shot lead, he played the 18th hole perfectly to clinch his first major.

Reed grew up wanting to be just like Woods, inside and out. I had my caddie remind me of that the entire week. Is this the same God that let Tom Watson become the oldest victor of the par three contest at the age of 68? The reality that you don't get another crack for 51 more weeks and that you probably only get about 10 more in your absolute prime has to be sobering.
