McKayla Maroney Questions Whether Gymnastics Career Was Worth It

McKayla Maroney and Larry Nassar

McKayla Maroney said Larry Nassar abused her hundreds of times - "every time I saw him" - speaking in an interview with NBC's Savannah Guthrie. "He said that nobody would understand this and the sacrifice it takes to get to the Olympics".

"They don't think they're responsible for Larry Nassar doing what he did", she said, adding that she also believed that MSU Interim President John Engler nearly seemed to be trying to "fight the survivors". I don't want to tell anybody about this. "The people and organizations who are responsible need to accept responsibility for the pain they caused me and my sister survivors".

Maroney, a member of the victorious US team at the 2012 London Olympics, told Today Show's Savannah Guthrie that the abuse by Nassar started at her first meeting with him when she was 13 and continued for years afterwards. She filed a lawsuit in California Tuesday alleging Michigan State and former USA Gymnastics leaders hid Nassar's conduct from the public and law enforcement. "So you can't tell people this", she said.

In her remarks, Maroney also slammed USA Gymnastics, the US Olympic Committee and Michigan State University for protecting Nassar for so long. "It didn't seem they cared about anything else".

Bon-Ton Chain Appears Likely to Liquidate, Report Says
On Friday, Bon-Ton filed notice that it had selected the Hilco/Gordon Brothers bid as the baseline bid for the bankruptcy auction. Without a buyer interested in keeping the Bon-Ton name alive, the chain is likely to go out of business.

The United States Olympic Committee previously apologized to Nassar's victims and MSU has vowed to improve its reporting method after facing fierce backlash suggesting the university ignored warnings about Nassar's abuse. This week, Maroney's teammate Jordyn Wieber announced that she would be filing a lawsuit against these same governing bodies, along with 260 others suing them for failing to stop the abuse.

Larry Nassar, a former team USA Gymnastics doctor, pleaded guilty in November 2017 to sexual assault.

McKayla Maroney said former team doctor Larry Nassar molested her "hundreds" of times. Maroney has also previously stated that USA Gymnastics in particular tried to keep her quiet about the abuse.

The USAG "made a corporate decision to purge or otherwise destroy all medical records of victims of Nassar, including those medical records of Jordyn Wieber, in order to further hide the sexual abuse of Nassar", the suit alleges.
