The Reason Behind Turkey's President Calling For Snap Elections In The Country!

On April 18, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called for presidential and parliamentary elections to be held on June 24 - almost a year and a half early.

Despite the fact that the upcoming elections will mark the beginning of the implementation of the executive presidency model abolishing the Prime Ministry, PM of Turkey Binali Yıldırım told reporters that June is a good periof for snap elections. This is nearly a year and a half earlier than the planned date - the elections in Turkey were held in November 2019.

The polls will be the first since a referendum a year ago that transformed Turkey's parliamentary democracy into a powerful executive presidency and will hand the president sweeping new powers after the elections.

The decision was reportedly made following a meeting between Erdogan and the Nationalist Movement Party's leader, Devlet Bahçeli, with whom the Turkish president's Justice and Development Party (AKP) has formed an alliance.

Earlier it was reported that Erdogan called the missile strikes the US, UK and France in Syria, "late step", reminiscent of "Bagnet". "The country needs to be brought out of the emergency rule regime starting today".

The UN last month called for an end to the emergency and accused Ankara of mass arrests, arbitrary sacking and other abuses.

On April 16, 2017, Turkey held a referendum during which the majority of voters pronounced themselves in favor of an 18-article bill switching a parliamentary system into a presidential one.

Media outlets have been shut down and scores of journalists have also been jailed. The law grants the High Electoral Board the authority to merge electoral districts and move ballot boxes to other districts.

Under the new system, the president will be able to prepare the budget and appoint high-level officials, including ministers and judges.

Although caught off-guard, opposition parties said they were ready for the early election.

Why call a snap election now?

Turkey is switching from a parliamentary system to a presidential system that abolishes the office of the prime minister and decreases the powers of the parliament, following a narrowly approved referendum previous year. The Turkish opposition has repeatedly criticized the prolongation of the state of emergency saying that it threatens human rights and freedoms in the county.
