"Our country has been overdue for comprehensive gun violence reform for many, many years", said Jesse Kidd, another Churchill student.

"We have 100 percent failed them", said Miranda Viscoli of New Mexicans to Prevent Gun Violence. A large number of state troopers were also on hand.

"We are walking out for those who lost their lives to gun violence, to talk about the real problems our country is facing and to find solutions (for) the problems that our leaders have failed to address", organizers said.

Students have been pushing relentlessly for gun control measures, with national protests starting with school walkouts on March 14, the one-month anniversary of the Parkland shooting.

There was one rally in support of National School Walkout Day where kids sat on the football field and held a moment of silence, while another featured students who were pro-gun and for gun owners' rights.

On April 20, 199, about 19 years ago, the shooting massacre at Columbine High School stunned the nation.

"I would like students to know political activism is a lot easier to participate in than they think it would be and it makes a difference as long as you voice your opinion", she said.

In Decatur, Bellmont High School students walked from school to the Courthouse. Organizers urged students to leave class at 10 a.m.to honor victims of gun violence.

Red Hook students, if they had parental permission, were allowed to gather on the school lawn for 30 minutes on Friday.

However, a few local schools within Fulton and Montgomery County chose to do something different rather than have students walk out and go against schools code of conduct.

She said they marched on the anniversary because they never want to see another tragedy like what happened there or in Parkland, Fla. However, students were made aware that missing class would affect their school attendance record. "It's our job as adults to fix this mess that we got them into". "My friends are teachers at Columbine High School, my sister was at Columbine High School".

A group of students headed to Salem directly after the walkout on Friday.
