Syracuse Suspends Theta Tau Fraternity, Accused Of Exhibiting Racist Behavior

Over the weekend, the 18 men depicted in the video have been removed from academic participation.

Campus newspaper The Daily Orange posted the latest video Saturday, shortly after Theta Tau's expulsion.

Watch the updates below.

The announcement came from Chancellor Kent Syverud in a video released Saturday afternoon. Elsewhere, other fraternity members pretend to sexually assault a person with disabilities during filming. Syracuse.com reports that students could face suspensions of expulsions.

The fraternity also released a statement on its website, offering an apology for the "the racist video that was recorded as a part of our new member process".

In his address, Syverud also labelled the videos "anti-Semitic, ableist and sexist" before going on to detail that within just two hours of seeing and authenticating the footage, Dean of Students Robert Hradsky issued a letter to Theta Tau leadership explaining the institution's decision to expel the frat. Since Wednesday, SU's Department of Public Safety has interviewed 38 people and will interview more in the next few days, he added.

The said, "I've checked on her through Mike just saying, man, I mean, I know they've had a tough year with all that". He said, "This is our first kind of big get together as the country music community comes back to Vegas".

"We know this issue extends beyond one fraternity and one video", Syverud said, adding that the university has "begun a top-to-bottom review of our entire Greek system".

Theta Tau apologized for the videos last week, which it said were intended as satire.

The chapter said that the first video "was a satirical sketch of an uneducated, racist, homophobic, misogynist, sexist, ableist and intolerant person" and claimed that "the new members seen in the video laughing at the awful things being said were not laughing in concurrence with these beliefs, but in fact the opposite".

While the Theta Tau fraternity has been expelled, punishments for the 18 students are still to be determined.

The phrase repeated in the video, "I solemnly swear always to have hatred in my heart..." was followed by racial slurs that many news outlets refrained from including.
