Woods made his only birdie on his final hole Friday in the Wells Fargo Championship, an 18-foot putt on the par-4 ninth hole. Instead of holes that presented nine legitimate birdie opportunities in each round, it is now more like five.

This week marked Woods' first start since last month's U.S. Masters, where he arrived as one of the favourites after some encouraging results but ultimately finished in a share of 32nd place.

After his round, Woods said that he was having trouble adapting to the surprisingly slow greens at Quail Hollow.

"I hit the ball fine, I struggled with my speed all day", he told the Golf Channel. They're on the slower side. "I tried to make sure I hit the putts harder and I kept pulling them. When you walk on the greens as I'm feeling on my feet, the greens are firm, but they're just not rolling out", he said. "Now I'm just trying to get a little better". As was the case on Thursday, Woods hit the ball well, but couldn't find the cup with his putter. "Just a odd combo to have firm but a little bit on the slower side".

Woods's frustrating day on the greens began at the par-5 10th, where he missed a 12-footer for birdie well short and low of the hole.

The latter missed cut was the last time Woods played here, but he can't shake the knowledge of the way the greens used to play.

At the 18th, after an excellent approach from 185 yards out of a fairway bunker to 10 feet, he missed that for birdie.

On Friday, Woods once again failed to make up any ground on the leaders despite hitting 13 greens in regulation.

Woods, who is 2 over for the tournament, hasn't played this course since 2012.

"Most of the golf courses I've played have been really hard setups, whether it's Torrey, LA., Honda, no one went low".

John Peterson started his rookie season on the PGA Tour about the time Tiger Woods started to experience back problems.

The 42-year-old and four-times major victor McIlroy are both making their first starts after disappointing performances at the U.S. Masters.

After his round, Woods joked: "I'm on a hot streak right now, I made the last putt".

Based on how uncharacteristically poorly Woods had been putting in the first two rounds, the odds certainly were stacked against him making it. Making matters even more ominous, Woods' two playing partners, Patrick Reed and Brooks Koekpa, both missed their putts on a similar line prior to Woods standing over his.
