Manchester United suffered a slim defeat at Brighton & Hove Albion in Friday's Premier League encounter at the American Express Community Stadium.

They have been beaten by all three of the newly promoted teams away from home and lost last month at home against West Brom.

Brighton got at the visitors from the opening minute, which they hadn't really done in the previous two encounters, where they sat back. Brighton won the game 1-0 which guaranteed their safety in the Premier League.

Mourinho admitted those players who stepped in, such as Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial, simply did not take their opportunity despite FA Cup final places to play for. "The players have been brilliant all season, and tonight was perhaps our best performance". Martial was also involved in creating an opportunity for substitute Jesse Lingard, after a nice one-two with the latter miscuing an effort on goal. "They were here ready to give everything for that point, and we were not able to motivate ourselves".

United arrived on the south coast knowing a win would all but seal second place for them, but a desperate disappointing display means they will have to wait to secure the runners-up spot.

Cooper: Lightning lacked intensity in Game 1 loss to Bruins
Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara appeared in his 111th playoff game, tying Rick Middleton for fourth place on Boston's career list. With his 24th career playoff goal, Johnson pulled even with Vincent Lecavalier for third on Tampa Bay's all-time list.

Pascal Gross headed Albion into a deserved 57th-minute lead with his seventh goal of the season.

"I think we learned probably after the first few games, that the performances were good enough that we could compete, and I think that encourages the team and [gives them] a lot of confidence". Maybe now you understand why some players don't play more than others. I knew it and I told them, but that's what we got. "That's what happened - it's normal and we couldn't score a goal and get a point".

"People always ask 'Why always Lukaku?"

"The attitude from the first minute and especially in the first half, they had more appetite".

"Different emotions, I didn't succeed in persuading my players that the four points we need to finish second doesn't look like a very important thing for my players, for me it is but for some of my players it doesn't look important".
