Gina Haspel, nominee to head CIA, sought to withdraw over questions about her role in agency interrogation program

The Trump administration was prepared Sunday to push ahead with Gina Haspel's planned confirmation hearing this week to lead the CIA, despite mounting questions about her tenure at the spy agency.

She was summoned to the White House on Friday for a meeting on her history in the CIA's controversial interrogation program - which employed techniques such as waterboarding that are widely seen as torture - and signaled that she was going to withdraw her nomination.

The sources told the paper that the White House is anxious that Haspel's role in interrogating terror suspects will keep her from getting the votes she needs in the Senate.

The lastminute came ahead of everything will be always a challenging grilling of Ms. Haspel over her function at the C.I.A.'s interrogation program created within the wake of the September 11 strikes, for example covert prisons the agency found across the globe to interrogate suspects.

White House aides including legislative affairs liaison Marc Short and spokeswoman Sarah Sanders then rushed to Langley for discussions on Friday that lasted several hours but did not secure a commitment from her to stick with the nomination, the paper said.

Haspel, one official said, was wary of suffering the same fate as failed veterans affairs nominee Ronny Jackson and of dredging up the CIA's troubled past.

Trump learned of Haspel's doubts and pushed for officials to convince her to keep the nomination, according to the Post.

Haspel, who would be the first woman to lead the CIA, is the first career operations officer to be nominated to lead the agency in decades.

George W Bush authorized the rendition, detention and interrogation program after the attacks of 11 September 2001.

Haspel's confirmation hearing is scheduled for Wednesday.

Senator Rand Paul, the Kentucky Republican, additionally expressed reservations concerning Mr. Pompeo, nevertheless he eventually relented, and the Senate confirmed him with a vote of 57 to 42. He said that while Haspel was one of the two officers "directly involved in the decision to destroy the tapes", he "found no fault" with what she did.

Haspel has received robust backing from former intelligence, diplomatic, military and national security officials, who praise her extensive intelligence career, which she served nearly entirely undercover.

"The takeaway for every United States Senator should be that they need a lot more information about Haspel than they're now getting", Faiz Shakir, the director of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), pointed out; last week, he demanded Central Intelligence Agency records on Haspel, under the Freedom of Information Act.
