In the early trade, the Sensex opened higher at 34,983.59 and hovered around 35,259.81 to 34,977.74 before ending at 35,208.14, up 292.76 points or 0.84 per cent. However, a higher opening in the domestic equity market capped the losses.

Major index gainers were GAIL, Mahindra & Mahindra, ICICI Bank, Axis bank, Hindalco, Tata Steel and Zeel.

Sectorally, banks, realty, finance and oil and gas gained the most, with the BSE Bankex settling 1.32% higher.

In the domestic market, on Friday, investors bought shares worth a net Rs 1,084.09 crore, while foreign portfolio investors sold shares worth Rs 1,628.23 crore, according to provisional data.

Other winners were Power Grid 1.14 percent, Bharti Airtel 0.69 percent, NTPC 0.47 percent, TCS 0.39 per cent, Maruti Suzuki 0.37 percent, Coal India 0.34 percent, Adani Port 0.29 percent, ITC 0.16 percent, Dr Reddy's 0.15 percent and HUL 0.13 percent. The major losers were Mahindra and Mahindra, Larsen and Toubro and Infosys.
