Why Gap Is Apologizing to Customers This Time

American clothing retailer Gap apologized for printing incomplete Chinese map on T-shirts for sales outside China

U.S. fashion retailer Gap became the latest giant corporation to apologise to China for selling a T-shirt with an "incorrect" map that did not feature Taiwan and other territories it claims. The company said the product has been pulled from the Chinese market and destroyed.

According to social media site Weibo, the map printed on the Gap T-shirt, which is now being sold in Canada, did not show the Chinese claimed territories, forcing the retail giant to apologize. According to the state-owned Global Times, the map also left out southern Tibet and the South China Sea.

Marriott and Gap aren't alone in causing offence to China, Delta Air Lines recently issued a public apology for what it described as a "grave mistake" after listing Taiwan and Tibet as independent countries on its website.

USA clothing retailer Gap has apologised to China over a T-shirt with a map showing the mainland but omitting Taiwan, becoming the latest foreign firm to run afoul of Beijing's policy on the self-ruling island. The shirt could not be found on Gap websites and it wasn't clear whether it was still being sold in shops in some countries. "We sincerely apologize for this unintentional error".

Sony Changes PS4, PS3, VR And Vita Console Warranties
Every company was awarded 30 days' notice to upgrade their policies or they'll need to deal with potential legal actions. Now following that, Nintendo too has announced that they have updated the terms of warranty for their hardware systems.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Lu Kang took note of the apology and would not say at a press briefing whether the government had complained to Gap.

In January, China forced US-based hotel chain Marriott International to shut down and "conduct a full content inspection" of its Chinese website and mobile app after a questionnaire that listed Taiwan and Tibet as individual countries led to complaints. All three companies have since apologized.

U.S. airline Delta (DAL) and European clothing retailer Zara also came under fire over similar issues on their websites in China. Mercedes-Benz said sorry for quoting the Dalai Lama on social media. On April 25, it sent dozens of global airlines a written threat of severe punishments if they don't change their websites to declare that Taiwan is part of China - a move that provoked a strong pushback from the White House.
