Pulitzer-winning author Philip Roth dies at 85

Philip Roth: A literary life in seven stages

Finally tonight, we remember the prolific writer and Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Philip Roth. Usually set in his birthplace New Jersey, Roth's fiction was known for its autobiographical nature, its blurring of boundaries between fictionality and fact, and the understanding of Jewish American identity, especially masculinity.

The decorated author won most top literary honors but the coveted Nobel Literature Prize eluded him.

Appeared in the May 23, 2018, print edition as 'Acclaimed Novelist Philip Roth Dies at 85'. Roth is one of only a handful of fiction authors to have won two National Book Awards (for "Goodbye, Columbus" and "Sabbath's Theater", 1994).

Roth, who was now living in Manhattan and CT at the time of his death, was arguably the most significant New Jersey-born novelist of the 20th Century and many of his works are considered American classics.

Throughout his career, Roth won two National Book Awards in addition to the Pulitzer Prize for fiction for his 1997 book "American Pastoral", which featured his recurring alter ego Nathan Zuckerman.

He graduated from Bucknell and pursued a master's degree from the University of Chicago graduating in 1955.

His book "When She Was Good" is said to be based in part of his life with Williams, who he said tricked into marriage by pretending she was pregnant. He famously offered one writer who had just published his first book this advice, as chronicled in The Paris Review: "I would quit while you're ahead".

"Roth's coarsest, frankest, and most exhilarating novel, Sabbath's Theater shows off Roth's linguistic verve, his brilliant characterisation, and his unparalleled ability to stare unblinkingly into the psyche of a depraved scoundrel", says Read It Forward, a website dedicated to all things literary.

Roth went on to teach at University of Iowa, Princeton University and the University of Pennsylvania.

As the news of his death spread, commentators shared their loved quotes from the author's work and considered his legacy in American literature.

Claire Bloom was his second wife, with the pair exchanging vows in 1990 and separating in 1995. A year later, she published a bruising memoir, 'Leaving a Doll's House, ' in which she portrayed him as depressed, remote, self-centered and verbally abusive. Bellow, a fellow North American Jew, and Roth in particular had a close friendship, recorded in letters written over the course of decades. "I was by this time no longer in possession of the mental vitality or the physical fitness needed to mount and sustain a large creative attack of any duration", Roth mentioned in a recent interview about his decision. It's enough. I no longer feel this dedication to write what I have experienced my whole life'.
