Disputes over trade tariffs, Russian Federation overshadow G7 meeting

Trump to leave G7 summit early amid feud with Trudeau, Macron

Tweeted Trump in a series of tweets starting last night: "Please tell Prime Minister Trudeau and President Macron that they are charging the USA massive tariffs and create non-monetary barriers".

Trudeau said he had told Trump that the talks had been made more complicated by a USA decision to impose tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum, ostensibly for national security reasons.

It's not clear what kind of trade deal or update to NAFTA Trump is seeking at the G7 Summit, especially since Mexican officials are not attending.

On Saturday, Trump repeated his desire to have a sunset clause in an updated NAFTA deal, a demand that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has rejected.

Canadian officials said on Friday that talks had been "cordial" throughout the day, and that a constructive discussion had taken place in a private meeting between Trump and Trudeau.

Trump withdrew the USA from the Paris climate accord and his attendance of a G7 session on the issue was in question well into the last minute.

Despite earlier reports of a rant over trade from Trump, he said the meeting "was not contentious" and called the relationships between the leaders "outstanding".

Florida beaches hit with rough surf as Alberto makes landfall
The storm, coming on the last day of the Memorial Day weekend, was expected to scramble holiday travel on Monday. The National Hurricane Center says Subtropical Storm Alberto has come ashore on the Florida Panhandle.

Trump, who repeated that his tariffs are meant to protect USA industry and workers from unfair worldwide competition, said he had suggested to the other G7 leaders that all trade barriers, including tariffs and subsidies, be eliminated. "Or we're going to make a deal directly with Canada, directly with Mexico", Trump said Saturday. "I think it will be very positive", Trump said on Friday, without giving details.

Although Canada and Mexico say the idea is unworkable, Trump told reporters earlier on Saturday that the new deal would contain such a provision.

But Trump's gambit, which his economic adviser Larry Kudlow told reporters amounted to a "free trade proclamation", called the other leaders' bluff - if they're so opposed to his new tariffs, he suggested, why not eliminate all tariffs?

Trump's statement was made just before he left: the United States president has been at odds with the G-7 countries over mounting import duties disagreements.

Fox Business contributors James Freeman and Kristina Partsinevelos discuss President Trump's upcoming meeting with North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un and the president's recently imposed tariffs. The president said Saturday that re-admitting Russian Federation to the elite club would be "an asset", telling reporters, "we're looking for peace in the world".

When Trump was pressed about the annexation of Crimea, he placed the blame on President Barack Obama for failing to handle the situation. The nuclear agreement included Germany and the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, which includes France and Britain - all G7 members.
