Canada legalises marijuana after 90 years of prohibition

Canada has voted to legalise cannabis for recreational use

The C-45 bill - also known as the Cannabis Act - passed the Senate in a 52 to 29 vote on Tuesday.

The fight to make marijuana legal in Canada has been a long battle for the country and PM Justin Trudeau's Liberals as marijuana was a huge part of Trudeau's 2015 election campaign.

Reports suggest that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau may announce that date during a press conference at 4:30 p.m. ET.

It means that Canada now joins Uruguay as the only two countries in the world where recreational cannabis is now legal, as technically it is still illegal in the Netherlands although the law is not actually upheld.

Federal regulation will allow those 18 and older to purchase marijuana in various forms, including edibles and cannabis-infused foods, but some provinces have set the age at 19.

As the first major economy to fully legalise cannabis, Canada's regulatory rollout will be closely watched by other nations considering the same path.

He had another bogey on No. 7, and the dagger to his chances of making the cut proved to be a double-bogey on the par-four ninth. Open 10 years ago, but he was nowhere near contention as he struggled in hard conditions at Shinnecock Hills.

The news was also greeted with enthusiasm by marijuana advocates in the U.S. Don Hartleben, who manages Dank of America, a retail cannabis store just south of the border in Blaine, Washington, said Canada's legalization was not only politically exciting, but a potential business boon for him.

If more use marijuana when they're in Canada, more will use when they're on vacation in the states.

Conservative senators also raised other concerns, such as slower US border crossings, that kept the bill in the upper house for about seven months.

Advocates argued that putting the limit at 21 would encourage a black market and drive youths into the hands of criminals. Transformative social policy, I think. "It ends 90 years of needless criminalization, it ends a prohibition model that inhibited and discouraged public health and community health in favor of just-say-no approaches that simply failed young people miserably". "Government officials have said to actually legally move recreational cannabis to the storefronts in which it will be sold", Cullen told The Current's Anna Maria Tremonti. "Now we can start to tackle some of the harms of cannabis".

"It is only by ending the prohibition, which is what legalization is, that we are able to implement a comprehensive and far more effective system of strict regulatory control", he said.

Conservative senators, however, were not as joyous at the passage of the bill and the implications for Big Pot.
