Instagram brings long-form video to 1 billion users

Facebook's Instagram service is loosening its restraints on video in an attempt to lure younger viewers away from YouTube when they're looking for something to watch on their smartphones.

IGTV is Instagram's big push into the world of long-form video content, and while you can already create and consume videos on Instagram through Stories and regular posts, these are all limited to just a few seconds.

Instagram Chief Executive Kevin Systrom said at an event in San Francisco that the section would be called IGTV and feature videos from rising internet celebrities and artists.

It will give Facebook more opportunities to sell advertising. All users will initially be able to record video up to 10 minutes, while select accounts with larger followings will be able to record video up to 60 minutes. Instagram's pitch here is that watching video content on mobile devices is clunky (*cough* YouTube *cough*) and a platform dedicated to long-form, vertical videos will make things a lot more intuitive.

Instagram becomes the fourth Facebook platform to hit the billion-user mark, including the namesake social network with more than two billion users, and the WhatsApp and Messenger services.

The 'trend' that is troubling the US
Suicide rates varied from 6.9 per 100,000 residents a year in the District of Columbia to 29.2 per 100,000 in Montana. Of those with no diagnosed mental health conditions, men are more likely to commit suicide and do so with firearms.

Instagram wanted IGTV to feel natural.

Instagram was launched just eight years ago.

Like YouTube, Instagram also has a large community of influential users with enormous followings.

"Five years after the launch of video on Instagram, we are excited to introduce IGTV which brings audiences closer to the creators they love". Although Instagram remains popular, YouTube is now the most popular social network among USA teens, according to a recent study from the Pew Research Center.

Watching IGTV videos is a bit like watching an Instagram live video now in that all videos are vertical and you can leave comments while you watch.
