Those who have their residencies registered overseas will be able to cast their votes at custom gates in the twin elections until 5 p.m. local time.

At least 56,322,632 registered voters were eligible to mark in their choice of presidential candidate and parliamentary party at 180,065 ballot boxes across the country.

Citizens have returned from their vacations to be able to cast their votes in the election, which is seen as a turning point in Turkish politics.

Sunday's elections were originally scheduled for late 2019.

For the first time, presidential and parliamentary ballots are being placed in a single envelope as eight global monitors and some million registered ballot box watchers stand on duty. If that does not happen, a runoff would be held July 8 between the leading two contenders.

Erdogan brought the elections forward.

The elections will also usher in a powerful new executive presidency long sought by Erdogan and backed by a small majority of Turks in a 2017 referendum.

Supporters of the reforms argue that they will modernize the country, but opponents fear a possible authoritarian rule.

Speaking in Istanbul, Mr Erdogan urged Turks to vote.

"God willing, Turkey will start flying with this system. With this system, we will achieve what others can not imagine", he said.

Supreme Court Opens Door to More Red-State Voter Purges
Other states begin the purge process after a voter goes an entire four-year cycle without casting a ballot. Seventeen states, all with Republican attorneys general, sided with Ohio's position.

His rivals, the Republican People's Party (CHP) candidate Muharrem Ince and the Iyi (Good) Party candidate Meral Aksener, also casted their votes in the cities they are registered.

Turkey was awash in campaign promises on Saturday as politicians pressed to get voters' attention in the last remaining hours before a ban begins ahead of Sunday's critical presidential and parliamentary elections.

"If Erdogan wins, your phones will continue to be listened to".

Ince, who voted in his hometown of Yalova in northwest Turkey, said he was returning to Ankara, the capital, where he would monitor the vote count at the High Electoral Board.

Erdogan blamed the coup on his former ally, USA -based Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen, and has waged a sweeping crackdown on his followers in Turkey, detaining some 160,000 people, according to the United Nations.

Other presidential candidates include Selahattin Demirtas, leader of the pro-Kurdish Peoples Democratic Party (HDP), who is now in jail on terrorism-related charges that he denies.

"But our military operation in Syria and the historically significant regional developments in Syria and Iraq made it compulsory for Turkey to overcome the uncertainties", Erdogan explained why Turkey would take early elections.

Demirtas has had to campaign from his prison cell through social media, and HDP claims that around 10,000 of its supporters and activists have been arrested since the end of the Kurdish peace process in 2015, impacting its ability to campaign.

Peter Osusky, head of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly delegation, told The Associated Press that all observers "are strongly adhering to so-called code of conduct" regardless of their political opinions.
