MERKEL'S MESS: German Government FACING COLLAPSE over Immigration Crisis

GETTYHans Michelbach has insisted Ms Merkel must work on the details of German's migration policy

A rift in the German government over mass migration showed no sign of resolution on Sunday evening as leaders of Chancellor Angela Merkel's party and its coalition partner met separately, each apparently waiting for the other to blink.

The lack of clarity from the Bavarian camp raises questions about the future of Merkel's governing coalition between the CDU-CSU alliance and the center-left Social Democratic Party (SPD).

It isn't clear yet what effect Seehofer's resignation might have.

The last-ditch attempt at an agreement follows a day of drama Sunday that ended with Merkel's party rallying behind the chancellor and the migration plan she helped negotiate with fellow European Union leaders last week.

Seehofer, who has demanded that Merkel toughen her open-doors refugee policy, earlier told colleagues that in spite of the measures agreed with European Union leaders, he saw no alternative to turning some migrants back at the border, a party source said.

The "Union" of CDU and CSU fused the southern state's beer-and-lederhosen-infused conservatism with more moderate politics, forming a centre-right force that dominated Germany for decades.

Both parties are meeting separately later Sunday to decide how to proceed. The CDU's leaders, who are now gathered in Berlin for a second straight day of discussions, said they still see room for a compromise solution in the migration dispute.

But Ms. Merkel has rejected any unilateral action by Germany, and insists on a coordinated European approach, as agreed at last week's EU asylum-policy summit in Brussels.

But he also struck a conciliatory tone, saying "there is an abundance of possibilities. for compromises", without specifying what they were.

Lakers Have 'Inside Track' To Signing LeBron James
It has been a very long time since the Nets have had that to look forward to and Leonard should not be included yet. To go along with their two max contract spots, Brooklyn is expected to have a lottery pick in the 2019 NBA Draft.

"Seehofer, who has nearly totally lost power in the CSU, now appears to want to bring down the chancellor in a kind of indirect political suicide. ending his career under the motto: first me, then the party, and maybe then the country", wrote the Hannoversche Allgemeine newspaper in an editorial.

"We'll have more talks today with the CDU in Berlin with the hope that we can come to an agreement", Mr Seehofer told reporters just before 2am on Monday.

Senior CSU lawmaker and former interior minister Hans-Peter Friedrich wrote on his Twitter account that the CDU and CSU wouldn't let themselves be divided.

CSU leaders are divided over how to face down a challenge from the anti-immigration Alternative for Germany (AfD) in October's regional election.

She could try to form a minority government, or seek a new election.

At the national level, Merkel also proposed that migrants arriving in Germany who first registered in another European Union country should be placed in special "admissions centres" under restrictive conditions.

He said the two parties should be aware that the far-right Alternative for Germany, which has soared in prominence since a wave of migrants fleeing conflict and poverty headed to Germany in the summer of 2015, stood ready to benefit from a meltdown of the conservatives. "The sum of everything we have decided has the same effect [as national measures]", she said.

"As a result Italy will be in the position to have really good reasons for no longer accepting any people coming to Italy by the Mediterranean", Patzelt says, adding that this would be exactly the result the CSU intends.
