Peace Talks Between Syrian Rebels & Russia About Southwest Syria Fail

UN Warns of Humanitarian Catastrophe if Fighting Escalates in Daraa, Syria

A major insurgent-held town in southwestern Syria has accepted the return of President Bashar al-Assad's rule, pro-government media and a war monitor said on Sunday, though some local activists and rebels disputed a deal had been completed.

Tens of thousands of Syrians are stranded at the border with Jordan as Syrian government forces, backed by Russian Federation, stepped up their offensive to retake the southern city of Daraa, one of the last rebel-held areas in Syria.

For almost two weeks, the Syrian army, backed by Russian aerial support, has been launching a massive bombardment campaign against the rebel-held towns in Syria's Daraa province, the birthplace of the 2011 uprising.

The regime has chipped away at rebel-held territory in Daraa since the escalation began nearly two weeks ago.

In another development, Zeid Ra'ad al-Hussein, the head of UN Human Right Commission, has on Friday, warned of a looming "catastrophe" in southern Syria as it raised the number of people fleeing a fierce government offensive to 160,000.

Regime forces continued to bombard other parts of Daraa province on Saturday, with air strikes killing at least 15 civilians, according to the Observatory.

The Israeli military said it took in six Syrians, including four young children, over the weekend for emergency medical treatment after their families were killed.

Ibrahim Jabawi, a spokesman for the main Free Syrian Army groups, said the rebels had proposed the return of civilian state institutions in the opposition-held areas and the entry of Russian military police rather than Syrian government forces.

In addition, Israel continues to provide "humanitarian aid" to Syrian refugees, who are fleeing from the current conflict, near the border of the Golan Heights.

Jabawi told The Associated Press that Russian Federation, a strong ally of President Bashar Assad's government, wants the rebels to hand over their weapons followed by a return of government forces to rebel-held areas.

But just under half of Daraa province - including part of the provincial capital of the same name - still remains in the hands of rebels, and the United Nations is putting the numbers of internally displaced at over 160,000.

The Kremlin said Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump will have a detailed discussion about Syria when they meet in July. Two ambulances carrying injured Syrians crossed into Jordan.

On Saturday the regime retook eight towns under Russia-mediated deals.

Regime forces have retaken large parts of the country lost to rebels since Russian Federation intervened on its behalf in 2015.

The Syrian government pressed ahead with its offensive to reclaim the strategic region that extends along the border with Jordan and the Golan Heights, and which was until recently part of a USA -backed and negotiated truce.

"We are moving in all directions and with all the parties to bring a ceasefire and protect civilians", he said in a Tweet on Saturday.
