Divers make progress in search for 12 boys soccer coach in Thailand cave

Rescue divers found the 12 boys, all members of the Wild Boars soccer team aged between 11 and 16, and their assistant coach, 25, late Monday after a dramatic search lasting more than a week.

Soldiers and rescue workers work in Tham Luang cave complex, as an ongoing search for members of youth soccer team and their coach continues in the northern province of Chiang Rai, Thailand, on July 1, 2018. The massive rescue effort also drew assistance from foreign experts in achieving a breakthrough.

"If they can handle that for a period of time, then see how they go before you venture into that overhead environment", he said.

Pat Moret, a rescue consultant, said the team will likely need a lot of medical treatment before they can be moved.

"Diving is not easy. For people who have never done it, it will be hard, unlike diving in a swimming pool, because the cave's features have small channels", he said.

Mr Anupong has said that should anything go wrong during a dive out of the cave, it could be "life-threatening".

They were found in a dry section of the Tham Luang cave complex at least two and a half miles from the entrance. That could take months, however, given that Thailand's rainy season typically lasts through October.

"As long as the kids know we know where they're at, they have food, a way to keep warm, water or filtration systems and light, it would really be the safest to wait it out".

Capt. Akanand Surawan, a commander with the Royal Thai Navy said additional divers will accompany the doctor and nurse.

Having them dive out of the cave was one of several options being considered, "but if we are using this plan, we have to be certain that it will work and have to have a drill to make sure that it's 100 percent safe", he said.

The navy Seal team on site had earlier sent out a request for donations of small full-face diving masks after it was found that the masks they had were too big for the children, fuelling speculation that a rescue attempt was imminent.

Advocates argued that putting the limit at 21 would encourage a black market and drive youths into the hands of criminals. Conservative senators, however, were not as joyous at the passage of the bill and the implications for Big Pot.

Diver Mr Reymenants said that "Nnone of them can swim or dive so that's going to be a real challenge". But their discovery is only the beginning of their ordeal. "I think it won't take more than a week", he told Israel's Channel 10 news on Tuesday.

The group is believed to have entered the cave when it was dry, but unexpected heavy rains blocked the exit.

The map shows how complicated it will be to get them out.

In the tape of the encounter, one of the British rescuers asks, in English, how many were in the group. "10 days. You are very strong". Rescuers are studying how to extract them safely.

One of the boys, noticing the camera and hearing words they don't immediately understand, says in Thai, "Oh, they want to take a picture; tell him we're hungry".

The video lasting about a minute was recorded sometime on Tuesday and was posted on the navy Seal Facebook page on Wednesday afternoon (NZ time). You just have to be comfortable.to overcome that fear and learn. "Many good signs. The rain has stopped and rescue teams have found potential ways to reroute the waterway". We will look after them as well as we can.

Edd Sorenson of International Cave Rescue and Recovery told the Guardian it would be "unbelievably dangerous" for untrained divers to try and swim to freedom.

"It would be very disconcerting for them to face that situation", he said.

Attempts are being made to reduce the risk of further flooding of the caves by pumping water from the underground system, Mr Anupong said.

However Yuval Zalmanov, who is taking part in the rescue efforts for Israeli company Maxtech, which manufactures emergency communications devices, said he thought the group would make it out in a matter of days.

He added that two Thai navy doctors have volunteered to stay with them for months, if needed.
