The assailant, later identified as Mohammed Dar Youssef, 17, from the village of Kobar, mounted the security fence surrounding Adam Thursday evening and stabbed two men before being shot to death by a third, who also suffered stab wounds.

Clashes broke out between young Palestinians and soldiers firing teargas during the raid.

Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman tweeted that expanding the Adam settlement was the "best answer to terrorism".

Hamas' armed wing, the al-Qassam Brigades, said earlier Thursday that Israel "must pay a high price with its blood" making an apparent reference to the three killed Palestinians. "The rioters hurled large rocks and firebombs and rolled burning tyres at troops, who responded with riot dispersal means", an Israeli army statement said.

The army added it was "reinforcing the defence" of Adam and other settlements.

All Israeli settlement construction in the occupied West Bank is considered illegal by the worldwide community.

Mr Khan condemned the attack on his rival, tweeting: "Strongly condemn the terrorist attack on Akram Durrani & his convoy". Sharif's brother, Shahbaz, has taken over the leadership of the party and is shepherding it through the election campaign.

More than 600,000 Jews live in about 140 settlements built since Israel's 1967 occupation of the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

"The continued Israeli attacks against occupied Jerusalem will increase tensions and will drag the region into a religious war that we have long warned against", Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas's office said in a statement.

The Israeli ambulance service Magen David Adom said that one of the men wounded was in serious condition and the other sustained light injuries.

The Israeli military shelled Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip on Wednesday, killing three militants, after its troops on the border came under fire.

Hamas, the Islamist group that rules the Palestinian Gaza Strip, praised the attack.

Over the last week, an Israeli soldier was killed and another wounded by what the army said were Gaza snipers, and seven Hamas gunmen died in air strikes.

Two infantry battalions were deployed in the West Bank in response to the incident, the IDF said.
