More than 150 dead as ISIS hit south Syria's Sweida

Mourners prayed for the victims at mass funerals held a day after the attacks.

"The toll is now 246 people dead, including 135 civilians", the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based monitoring group, said.

At least 166 people were killed in a suicide bombing and attacks that took place in the southern province of Suwayda, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Syria tweeted.

Since then, Assad has moved to crush the last remnants of the Syrian opposition in eastern Ghouta, Homs, and the southwest countryside.

He said 26 pro-government fighters had been killed and more than 30 people wounded in the attack on populated areas close to Sweida city.

The Syrian army has been relentlessly striking IS positions in the areas of Yarmouk basin in the western countryside of Daraa near the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

Sweida, whose residents are mostly from the Druze minority, has been relatively insulated from the war that has ravaged the rest of the country since 2011.

At least 41 civilians have been killed in air strikes on the jihadist holdout since July 19, the monitor says.

In a tweet late Tuesday, Trump said both the United States and the European Union should drop all tariffs, barriers and subsidies. President Trump and European Commission President Juncker held a news conference Wednesday afternoon.

Syrian government forces have discovered a field hospital used by members of the Jabhat Fateh al-Sham Takfiri terrorist group, formerly known as al-Nusra Front, containing a considerable amount of Israeli-made medicine and medical supplies in the country's strategic southwestern province of Quneitra. The Observatory said at least 56 militants were killed.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attacks but state media, the government mouthpiece, are blaming Islamic State militants for the carnage.

Bou Ammar, from Shbiki, said there weren't many men left to defend the village when the militants attacked.

Hezbollah offered condolences to the people of Sweida in particular and all Syrians in general, as he praised the courage of the Syrian Army soldiers and the locals who confronted the terrorist attacks and foiled them.

The group, which has around 1,000 fighters in the region, has been the target of an intense campaign of bombing by Russian and Syrian jets in recent days.

A Syrian military source accused Israel on Tuesday of firing at one of its warplanes as it carried out operations against IS in southern Syria.

Since their offensive in June, Syrian President Bashar Assad's forces have retaken territories controlled by the rebels along the Golan Heights frontier and are now fighting militants in the country's southern tip.
