Kelly, who just hit the one-year mark, told staff members Monday that Trump asked him to keep the job for the duration of his first term, and he accepted.

"We didn't cover ourselves in glory", Kelly told a gathering of reporters last March.

In addition, "a White House official cautioned that while the plan is for Mr. Kelly to remain in his post through 2020, unforeseen circumstances could cause the plan to change", the newspaper disclosed.

For months, rumors swirled in Washington about Mr. Kelly falling out of favor with the president, suffering a deteriorating role in the White House and looking to the exit.

Kelly has been rumored to be on his way out of the West Wing for months.

Iran says U.S. must return to nuclear deal before meeting with Trump
Whenever the USA has managed to change Iranian policies, it has been as a result of offering valuable incentives and concessions. Britain, along with China, Germany, France, Russia and the European Union, are negotiating with Iran on preserving the deal.

Still, Trump is known as a mercurial boss, whose feelings on key staffers can shift rapidly.

On Monday, the president tweeted congratulations to Kelly on reaching the one-year mark.

Kelly was initially touted for his military background and seen as a force of order and calm in a chaotic White House plagued by a high turnover rate.

It was July 28th of past year when Trump announced Kelly would replace Reince Priebus.

"I'm leaving and I'm not coming back", Kelly has told his aides, only to show up for work the following day, according to Politico, which reported that he has spent early mornings at his gym. While he has not backed away from his assertion that the position is "the hardest job" he'll ever have, Kelly has signaled a willingness to forge ahead in the postition even with diminished clout. "He's a wonderful man", Mr. Trump added at the time.
