UN peacekeepers return after 4 years to Israel-occupied Golan Heights near Syria

Russian Federation will deploy its military police on the Golan Heights frontier between Syria and Israel, its defense ministry said on Thursday, after weeks of mounting volatility in the area. Moscow, Damascus's weightiest ally, has in turn sought coordination with Israel as a bridge with Washington in dealing with Syria's complex war.

More alarming for Israel, however, is the Iranian presence at the border.

Israel acknowledged a return to normalcy along the frontier. Lieberman reiterated Israel's demand that Iran not set up military bases against it in Syria, and that Syria not be used to smuggle arms to Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Asked whether Israel should be less wary of possible flare-ups on the Golan - much of which it seized from Syria in the 1967 war and annexed in a move not recognised overseas - Lieberman said: "I believe so". In 2014, al-Qaeda militants in the area kidnapped 45 United Nations peacekeepers before releasing them after two weeks.

The Islamic State has also been routed from nearby territory it once controlled.

Russian Federation demanded the immediate access by global humanitarian entities to the Rukban refugee camp, where it is suspected that the Pentagon carries out recruitment work among civilians to make up radical groups.

Syria said late Thursday that its air defenses destroyed an unspecified enemy target during an attempted airstrike west of Damascus, as residents reported a series of loud explosions around the Syrian capital.

During their summit in Helsinki, Russian President Vladimir Putin and President Donald Trump said they were exploring ways to protect Israel from the war in Syria.

The group is made up of about 300 fighters and is the only one remaining in the Syrian Golan Heights that has not yet surrendered to Syrian President Bashar Assad's army, which has recovered most of the Golan Heights along the Israeli border. He said a preliminary assessment was that the infiltrators were Islamic State militants.

JAF stressed that it remains at the highest level of alert to deal with any terrorist groups, using necessary force and will not allow any to cross the borders of the Kingdom. The army's announcement came shortly after Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman toured a Patriot missile defence battery in northern Israel during a military preparedness drill.
