Both software and hardware contribute to maximizing battery life throughout the day. That's why Android 9 comes with features like Adaptive Battery, which learns the apps you use most and prioritizes battery for them, and Adaptive Brightness, which learns how you like to set the brightness in different settings, and does it for you. But these features are available in beta now for Pixel phones running Android 9. Android 9 also helps you get things done faster with App Actions, which predicts what you'll want to do next based on your context and displays that action right on your phone. For example, if you connect headphones (preferably without needing a dongle), Android will surface an action to resume playing from your Spotify playlist.

Slices is a more specific form of App Actions, diving deeper into specific apps.

Google has launched the latest version of Android - Android 9. This should also help with one-handed use on taller (18:9) phones.

With Digital Wellbeing you get a Dashboard that lets you quickly glance at how much time you're spending on your device and which apps you're using the most.

After opening up the app switcher, hold your finger down on any bit of text in one of the previews. There are some nice UI improvements in there, too, like more rounded design elements and a redesigned Quick Settings. These changes are relatively small, but still make a big difference in day-to-day use.

If you don't want to go through the hassle of manually sideloading your Pie update, you can always just wait until the OTA shows up on your Pixel device sometime within the next 24 hours or so.

Those features, appropriately named "Adaptive Brightness" and "Adaptive Battery", will take advantage of past usage information to lower your device's brightness at opportune times and reduce the amount of power little-used apps receive. It also tallies the number of notifications you've received and the number of times you've unlocked your phone.

The new Android will also allow developers to access APIs that manage secure NFC payments and will sport a new ART runtime that will look to reduce an app's memory footprint and speed up performance.

Wind Down is another new feature, which switches on Night Light and Do Not Disturb, and fades the screen to grayscale before bedtime. The screen will also fade to grayscale at bedtime to help you keep in mind to get to sleep at your chosen time. And Android Pie isn't a huge upgrade like Oreo was, so it's not as exciting, either.
