Wake Forest assistant basketball coach Jamil Jones surrendered to police on Thursday (Aug. 9), charged with an assault in New York City that resulted in the death of a tourist, according to authorities.

Police say Jamill Jones punched Sandor Szabo early Sunday after he mistook Jones for an Uber driver.

Relatives say Szabo tapped on the window of Jones' SUV while searching for his Uber after leaving a family wedding around 1:15 a.m. Sunday. Szabo had been treated for fractures to the left side of his face and the back of his head, and for bleeding on the brain, according to the complaint filed against Jones.

Ohio State is also conducting an investigation, undoubtedly to find out if Meyer knew of the allegations against Zach Smith . Ryan Day, who has been the team's offensive coordinator, will be acting head football coach while Meyer is on leave.

The parents of a Florida man who died after he was punched by an assistant basketball coach at Wake Forest University said Friday they don't accept the coach's condolences.

Wake Forest is coached by former National Basketball Association star Danny Manning. He said Jones is cooperating with the police investigation. Szabo died at the hospital after two days on life support.

"The court made the proper ruling with the charges, and the District Attorney's office made the proper ruling with the charges", the statement read, per the Post. Jones was with his family after the court session, his attorney, Alain Massena, told The Associated Press. Wake Forest head coach Danny Manning said at the time that Jones was a "well-respected bright mind" in the coaching world and brought "new blood" and "new perspectives" to Wake Forest. He has also coached at UCF, VCU and Florida Gulf Coast. "He was a really good person". "His lovely spirit and his love of life will remain with us", the company said.
