Boston Globe Organizes Response To Trump's Attack On Media

The U.S. Senate on Thursday unanimously adopted a resolution affirming support for a free press and declaring that "the press is not the enemy of the people".

"I don't think the press can just sit back and take it, they need to make their case when the most powerful man in the world tries to undercut the First Amendment", said Ken Paulson, a former editor-in-chief of USA Today who heads the Newseum's First Amendment Center and is dean of communications at Middle Tennessee State University. While stewing privately about Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein as "enemies. trying to stick the knife right in our groin", not even Nixon tagged the lot of us, Soviet-style, as "enemies of the people". They purposely cause great division & distrust.

This resolution follows tweets Trump sent Thursday morning criticizing the "FAKE NEWS" media.

"To label the press "the enemy of the people" is as un-American as it is risky to the civic compact we have shared for more than two centuries", the Globe wrote in its editorial.

A Boston Police cruiser sat outside the Globe's downtown headquarters, and the FBI is investigating alleged threats called into the newspaper.

In an impassioned opinion piece the NYT editorial board, it wrote: "In 2018, some of the most damaging attacks are coming from government officials. And calling journalists the "enemy of the people" is risky, period", the Times wrote.

The initiative was started by "The Boston Globe" in response to Donald Trump deriding media reports as "fake news" and calling journalists enemies of the people. If one first comes successfully for the press as an "enemy of the American People", what stops someone for coming next for your friends?

Meanwhile, the U.S. Senate on Thursday passed a resolution with no objections stating that "the press is not the enemy of the people".

"Journalistic outlets have had threats throughout time but it's the president's rhetoric that gives us the most concern", the spokesperson said.

In his tweet trashing the Globe, Trump claimed the "Failing " bought the newspaper for "2.1 BILLION DOLLARS" and then sold it for "1 DOLLAR" and accused the Globe of being "in COLLUSION with other papers on free press" adding "PROVE IT!"

The resolution also mentioned quotes from previous US presidents, including the Founding Fathers, who revered a free and independent press.

The Wall Street Journal: The prominent publication chose to refrain from participating because it said it goes against the independence that editorial boards seek.

Washington Post Executive Editor Martin Baron, who has responded directly to Trump's attacks, said the paper's reporting on the president is not a result of hostility.
