Former Trump campaign chair found guilty of fraud

Micheal Cohen is under investigation over bank and tax fraud

Manafort was found guilty on five counts of tax fraud, one count of failing to file reports of foreign bank and financial accounts and two counts of bank fraud.

The jury in USA federal court in Alexandria, Va., said it could not reach a verdict on 10 of the 18 counts with which Manafort was charged. The juror, Paula Duncan, described how she was a supporter of President Donald Trump, doubted the testimony of Manafort deputy Rick Gates and thought the prosecutors inched too close to a Russian Federation collusion accusation.

President Trump called the verdict a "sad thing" and said Manafort is "a good man". This started as Russian collusion. But partial verdicts are allowed, so the eight convictions stand. It represented a stunning fall for Manafort, a well-known figure in Republican politics for decades.

Attorney Kevin Downing addresses the media outside federal court after Paul Manafort was found guilty of eight financial crimes in Alexandria, Va., Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2018.

The FBI raided Cohen's home and office on a referral from Mueller. Prosecutors said Manafort had lied to banks to get $20 million worth of loans-which he used to maintain an expensive lifestyle after his lucrative political consulting work dried up-and hid $65 million from the IRS in overseas bank accounts.

The two bank fraud charges on which he was convicted each carry a potential prison term of up to 30 years.

Manafort, 69, was a veteran lobbyist. "Manafort has nothing to do with our campaign".

US urges Canada and Saudi Arabia to resolve feud
Some media reports have suggested that more than 15,000 scholarships could be pulled from Saudi students across Canada . TV pundits brought up Canada's suicide rate in what appeared as a broadside against the country's way of living.

Trump said in televised comments that the case did not implicate him in any crimes, but he felt badly for Manafort.

Moscow has denied interfering in the 2016 election and Trump has said there was no collusion.

Duncan claimed that the holdout juror is the one who prompted them to send a note to Judge T.S. Ellis asking for an explanation of the term, "reasonable doubt". Trump could vacate Manafort's convictions with a presidential pardon.

Prosecutors accused Paul Manafort previous year of laundering millions of dollars through real estate holdings. "I did not want Paul Manafort to be guilty, but he was, and no one's above the law".

"I did not want Paul Manafort to be guilty. That's just obvious in the fact that he flipped on Manafort". "Justice" took a 12 year old tax case, among other things, applied tremendous pressure on him and, unlike Michael Cohen, he refused to "break" - make up stories in order to get a 'deal.' Such respect for a fearless man!"

Citing people familiar with the matter, the newspaper said the loans were from Sterling National Bank and Melrose Credit Union, two NY institutions that do business with the taxi industry.

And she noted, Mueller's team of prosecutors seemed uninterested, at times, during the trial. His sentencing is scheduled for August 29. The investigation by U.S. Attorney's office for the Southern District of NY was also triggered by the Special Counsel's findings. In September, Manafort is scheduled to be tried on separate charges which also resulted from special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation: Failing to register as a foreign agent of the Ukraine and witness tampering.
