The main suspect in 20-year-old Mollie Tibbetts' tragic murder is 24-year-old Cristhian Rivera, whom authorities said is allegedly an undocumented immigrant.

The man who was arrested in the murder of Mollie Tibbetts, the University of Iowa student who disappeared last month, worked less than three miles from where she was staying the night she vanished.

She was last seen jogging near her boyfriend's home, where she was staying while he was out of town.

Investigators allege that Rivera abducted Tibbetts while she was out for an evening run in Brooklyn on July 18. The footage showed a Chevy Malibu connected to Rivera that was driving back and forth as Tibbetts was running in the area, Rahn said.

According to Rahn, Rivera told officers he saw Tibbetts running in rural Poweshiek County, and that he approached her while she was running and "ran alongside of her or behind her".

Rivera allegedly said that he had "blocked" himself from remembering the time between - "which is what he does when he gets very upset", according to the arrest affidavit. Her body was found in a field Tuesday morning.

Dane Lang said Rivera worked there for the past several years and was an "employee in good standing". In a press conference Tuesday afternoon, Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation Special Agent in Charge Rick Rahn said officers conducted a "lengthy interview" with Rivera, who then showed them where the body was. Farm officials said they were fully cooperating with the police investigation. "This is sadly a tragic event and we hope it wouldn't occur anytime in the near future".

'We know that many of you will join us as we continue to carry Mollie in our hearts forever'.

The case is certain to add fuel to the explosive and racially-tinged debate about immigration, as President Donald Trump's border wall, which he touts as a symbol of security, remains an unfulfilled and unfunded campaign promise. She had been brutally murdered. He told authorities that he blacked out and then dumped her bloody body in the secluded location. He is in jail, and on Wednesday, a judge set his bail at $5 million.

Trump alluded to the case at a rally in West Virginia on Tuesday: "You heard about today with the illegal alien coming in, very sadly, from Mexico and you saw what happened to that incredible, handsome young woman", he said, shaking his head.

DOT officials say they are prohibited from issuing a license or ID to any undocumented immigrant. The wall is being built. A preliminary hearing on the murder charge was scheduled for August 31.

The lawyer asked the court to prevent the government from claiming Rivera is in the country illegally.

Spokesman Dane Lang said Tuesday night that Yarrabee Farms is a "small family farm" owned by him and his father, Craig Lang, who has always been a prominent Iowa farmer and political figure.

"This is a young lady whose name was Mollie Tibbetts", Patrick said. Lang says, "this is a really scary situation".

Richards, an attorney for Cristhian Bahena Rivera, stated in a court document filed Wednesday that an employer has said Rivera is in the USA legally.

"As Iowans, we are heartbroken, and we are angry", Reynolds written statement reads in part.

The lawyer representing the man accused of murdering Mollie Tibbetts has suggested his client was actually working in the USA legally.

"On behalf of Mollie's entire family, we thank all of those from around the world who have sent their thoughts and prayers for our girl", the statement said.
