Longtime US senator and war hero John Mc Cain has died after long fight with brain cancer

McCain's death comes just one day after we learned the senator and former Republican presidential nominee chose to stop medical treatment for brain cancer. His dogged patriotism and passion for country made him an inspiration, and a model, for all of us.

John McCain is released from a Vietnam POW camp.

"I may have said some things here today that maybe you don't agree with, and I might have said some things you hopefully do agree with".

McCain was a two-time presidential candidate, losing the GOP nomination in 2000 to George W. Bush and the general election in 2008 to Barack Obama, when he ran alongside Palin.

The six-term senator from Arizona had been absent from Washington since last December but remained outspoken to the end, railing against Donald Trump and urging defence of the post-war liberal democratic order.

"John McCain was about more than politics". During a recent appearance by former Vice President Joe Biden, who is promoting his new book, "Promise Me, Dad: A Year of Hope, Hardship and objective", the Democrat lauded Meghan's father and offered words of encouragement.

John McCain, a former prisoner of war in Vietnam who served as a USA senator from Arizona for more than three decades, died on Saturday at the age of 81.

McCain had represented Arizona in the Senate since 1987. McCain has been awarded the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Legion of Merit, Purple Heart, Distinguished Flying Cross medal and the Prisoner of War medal.

He served in the US Navy as a fighter pilot and became a prisoner of war in North Vietnam in 1967.

Sarah Palin, who ran alongside McCain as his vice president in the 2008 campaign, said that on Saturday, the world "lost an American original". A conservative on most issues, he pushed for campaign finance reform and the effort to account for those missing in Vietnam.

Republicans, driven by Trump, were one vote away from advancing a repeal of Obama's health care law.

On July 25, 2017, McCain delivered a Senate floor speech not long after his cancer diagnosis that was widely seen as his farewell address.

McCain had been locked in a war of words with Trump dating back to 2015 and specified months ago that he did not want the president to attend his funeral. In the Senate, he was a mentor to so many senators: he taught us how to work with leaders on the world stage, and he taught us how to work with each other regardless of party back at home.

His predecessor, Malcolm Turnbull, also thanked McCain for his "courageous life" in a tweet. His wife and other family members were with him. Those were causes greater than himself and party politics. The pair ultimately lost to Barack Obama and Joe Biden.

A statement from the Senator's office confirmed the Senator was surrounded by his wife Cindy and his family when he passed.

"My country saved me. His love and his care, ever present, always unfailing, took me from a girl to a woman - and he showed me what it is to be a man". As a leader of the Armed Services and Foreign Relations committees, he was at the forefront of a group of senators who saw Putin's Russian Federation as a growing threat to America.

A police escort accompanied the hearse that carried his body, as a fiery sunset cast its last light over the rustic countryside McCain loved dearly, and local residents came bearing flowers for the late political titan. "Karen and I are praying for Senator John McCain, Cindy and their family this weekend", Pence tweeted.
