Barcelona and Argentina forward Lionel Messi, who is a five-time Ballon d'Or victor, missed out on a place in the top three.

Messi and Ronaldo have been regarded as the two best players in the world for a decade now, but the added El Clasico element of the perennial rivalry ended this summer when the latter joined Juve after nine years with Real Madrid.

Lionel Messi first got nominated for FIFA World Player of the Year 12 years ago, in 2007, as a 20-year old La Masia product slowly entering the Barcelona first-team.

A five-time victor of the award, Messi has also finished second in the voting for each of Ronaldo's five previous wins in 2008, 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2017.

Polling is open until the awards ceremony on September 24 in London.
