After months of being told exactly what kind of message he's been sending by refusing to ban Alex Jones and his ilk from Twitter, CEO Jack Dorsey finally banned the InfoWars host from his social media platform.

Jones had about 900,000 followers on Twitter and Infowars had about 430,000.

Twitter previously had suspended Jones for a week after he broke site rules against violent threats.

Last month, Twitter gave Jones a small punishment for his inflammatory behavior on the platform-a one-week suspension that prevented Jones from tweeting or retweeting from his personal account.

A post on the Twitter Safety account said the company took the action as a response to content posted yesterday after the much publicized senate hearing involving Facebook and Twitter. It showed Jones verbally attacking CNN reporter Oliver Darcy, saying, among other things, "Those are the eyes of a rat". Previous violations also contributed to the decision to ban both accounts.

Jones continued to repeatedly interrupt Rubio, calling him a "frat boy" and a 'snake'.

It came at the conclusion of a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing at which Dorsey and Facebook chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg testified in a largely collegial atmosphere where the executives and senators spoke of the need for further efforts to thwart foreign influence campaigns on social media.

Jones then asked Rubio if he planned on having him arrested if he dared to touch him again.

The Justice Department statement appeared to escalate a war between the administration and Silicon Valley after a series of attacks by President Trump claiming tech firms were biased against conservatives.

At one point, he said Darcy was "smiling like a possum that crawled out of the rear end of a dead cow".

Jones' bread and butter is shouting over-the-top grievances and conspiracy theories in videos that he shares on social media, radio and his own websites. You look like a possum that got caught doing some really nasty stuff - in my view.

After talking over Rubio a few times, Jones tapped the senator on the shoulder, as seen in video live-streamed and promoted by Cassandra Fairbanks, a right-wing blogger and an activist.

Jones countered, "Oh, you want me to get arrested?"

Jones is now active on Facebook; his personal suspension there recently expired.
