More than 870,000 without power as Florence lumbers inland

10M in crosshairs of Hurricane ‘Florence’

Hurricane Florence will be one of the biggest storms to make landfall along the U.S. eastern seaboard in decades.

On Thursday evening, Florence's forward movement was just 5mph.

After reaching a terrifying Category 4 peak of 140 mph earlier in the week, Florence made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane at 7:15 a.m.at Wrightsville Beach, a few miles east of Wilmington and not far from the SC line, coming ashore along a mostly boarded-up, emptied-out stretch of coastline.

Florence's weakening as it neared the coast created tension between some who left home and authorities who anxious that the storm could still be deadly.

It is set to make landfall midday today near Cape Fear, North Carolina, bringing up to 40 inches of rain, and storm surges as high as 13ft. "Florence will then recurve across the western Carolinas and the central Appalachian Mountains early next week".

Gov. Roy Cooper urged state residents to stay on guard despite Florence's projected southwestern storm track.

At least 88 people died as a result of the storm, many of whom drowned in the floodwaters, the Department of State Health Services announced past year.

Roads and intersections on North Carolina's Outer Banks barrier islands were already inundated with water.

Forecasters at the National Hurricane Centre said the storm would weaken after making landfall but also linger, dumping heavy rains for days.

Forecasters said conditions will only get more lethal as the storm pushes ashore early Friday near the North Carolina-South Carolina border and makes its way slowly inland.

Donald Trump presidency called 'Crazytown' in new Bob Woodward book
The latest book on the Trump White House paints a damning picture of the current presidency. "He just scurries around". And, not surprisingly, Trump was even more scathing about Attorney General Jeff Sessions in private than he is public.

"It's going to be a lot of wind".

Air Force General Terrence J O'Shaughnessy, head of US Command, said search and rescue is a top priority but that the magnitude of the storm may exceed the ability of rescuers.

Hurricane Florence is fast approaching the border of North and SC.

In Jacksonville, North Carolina, next to Camp Lejeune, firefighters and police fought wind and rain as they went door-to-door to pull people out of the Triangle Motor Inn after the structure began to crumble and the roof started to collapse. The rainfall will produce life-threatening flash flooding in Virginia and the Carolinas. In some counties, almost 1 in 3 people live below the poverty line.

About 800 flights in the region have been canceled ahead of the storm, CNN reported.

About 1.7 million residents across the states' coastlines are under mandatory evacuation orders, and tens of thousands of hospital patients and prison inmates have been moved out of Florence's path.

A state of emergency has been declared in five coastal states - North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Maryland and Virginia - as well as the USA capital Washington.

Muriel Bowser, the Mayor of the nation's capital, has declared a state of emergency. Hurricane-force winds extended 80 miles from its center, and tropical-storm-force winds up to 195 miles. The homes of about 10 million were under watches or warnings for the hurricane or tropical storm conditions. "This storm will bring destruction to North Carolina". And when a storm surge reaches 13 feet and results in severe coastal flooding, people near the Atlantic Ocean can drown very quickly. Charleston felt the impact of three days of record-setting 10-foot storm surges in 2017. However, the surge is expected to be accompanied by large and destructive waves, regardless of when the storm arrives.

The worst may come as the gargantuan storm swirls past the shore and dumps days of rain on mountainous interiors, potentially creating disastrous mudslides.
