In April, Cosby was convicted of three counts of aggravated indecent assault for drugging and assaulting Constand, a Temple University employee.

Though some 60 women have accused Bill Cosby of sexual assault-specifically of drugging and raping them-none of those accusations has resulted in prison time for Cosby, until today, when he was sentenced to three to 10 years in prison for the assault of Andrea Constand in 2004.

"Nothing could have prepared me for an evening of January 2004, when life as I knew it came to an abrupt halt", Constand wrote, referring to the time of the attack. A defense attorney had asked that Cosby, 81, be spared a prison term, citing his age and frailty. The judge also referred to - and addressed - one victim: "As she [Constand] said, Mr. Cosby, you took her attractive, healthy young spirit and crushed it", before telling Constand, "I heard the very clear impact on your life". He later added that he gave "great weight" to the victim-impact statement, including the "traumatic aftermath, alienation from friends, pain, anguish, [and] nightmares" Andrea Constand experienced.

Montgomery County Court of Common Pleas Judge Steven O'Neill ordered Cosby to be jailed immediately, denying Cosby's request for bail while lawyers appeal the conviction.

California Criminal Defense Attorney J. Tooson, who was not involved with Cosby's case, tells Fox News that the disgraced comedian's sentence is "sufficient".

The Television Critics Association, which includes more than 200 TV critics and journalists, voted "overwhelmingly" to take back the Career Achievement Award given to Cosby in 2002.

Camille Cosby, Bill Cosby's wife, said in a statement that she had retained a former prosecutor to facilitate her efforts to "uncover the truth" regarding what she says is a feud between O'Neill and Castor.

Steele said Cosby could be sent to Laurel Highlands, a state prison for lower-risk inmates on the other side of the state, about 70 miles southeast of Pittsburgh.

The classification means Cosby must undergo lifetime counseling and report quarterly to authorities. But the maximum was set at 10 years. Cosby's lawyers had asked to delay sentencing until December.

Cosby's team also argued that the sexually violent predator status was unconstitutional, but Judge O'Neill ruled against that argument on Monday. "So it's taken a long time to get there", Mr. Steele said. And during the two-day hearing, a psychologist for the state argued that Cosby would likely re-offend if given the opportunity.

"Eighty-one-year-old blind men who are not self-sufficient are not a danger, unless perhaps to themselves", he said.

"When the sexual assault happened, I was a young woman brimming with confidence and looking forward to a future bright with possibilities", she wrote in her five-page statement. "Now, nearly 15 years later, I'm a middle-aged woman who's been stuck in a holding pattern for most of her adult life, unable to heal fully or to move forward".

In addition, Cosby can not have any contact with Constand.

The decision is ultimately up to O'Neill, who oversaw Cosby's 2018 retrial, as well as his mistrial a year earlier that ended in a hung jury.

Cosby broke barriers in the 1960s as the first black actor to star in a network show.
