Senate panel receives new Kavanaugh allegations

A protest Monday outside the Supreme Court against Judge Brett Kavanaugh

The US Senate Judiciary Committee is reviewing new allegations of sexual misconduct against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.

Lawyer Michael Avenatti identified his client on Twitter and posted an email to the committee. Asked about the move, Trump said the lawmakers "could not be nicer" and "could not be more respectful". He said he did not question that perhaps Ford at some point in her life was sexually assaulted but said "what I know is I've never sexually assaulted anyone".

Mr. Trump has declined to dispatch the FBI to investigate Ms. Ford's allegations, and other allegations that have now followed hers, because he and Senate Republicans are determined to seat Judge Kavanaugh by next week.

But the Blasey family's reticence is in stark contrast to the outpouring of public support from those who know her as she prepares to testify Thursday before the Senate Judiciary Committee.

In recent days, the president has grown increasingly frustrated with the handling of the claims against Kavanaugh, said a person familiar with his views who was not authorized to discuss private conversations publicly.

Kavanaugh has flatly denied all accusations, including during a national television interview on Fox News Monday night.

"It's possible I'll hear that and say, 'hey, I'm changing my mind, ' " Trump said of the anticipated testimony.

The latest allegation comes from a woman named Julie Swetnick, who attended Gaithersburg High School in Maryland. She will tell her story - one she no doubt remembers with painful clarity - but there will be no smoking gun, no undeniable forensic evidence, and in the end, Brett Kavanaugh may well be confirmed as the newest Justice on the Supreme Court.

The four sworn affidavits are among the information the committee is considering on the eve of Ford and Kavanaugh's testimony Thursday.

Canelo vs GGG: Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin's dramatic weigh
Saul "Canelo" Alvarez has taken the WBA, WBC and IBF middleweight titles after a majority decision against Gennady Golovkin . The good news is almost every single stakeholder Saturday night was quick to express hope that a third bout is now in order.

Prof Ford and Judge Kavanaugh are due to testify before a Senate panel about her allegations on Thursday. He said rejecting Kavanaugh would be "a disgusting insult" and "a very unsafe game" for the U.S.

In his declaration, Koegler said he met the Fords while coaching their son's baseball team more than five years ago. Swetnick claims that the boys in the lineup included Kavanaugh and Judge, but does not say that they assaulted the girls, or the names of other witnesses who could corroborate it.

Kavanaugh also stands accused of exposing himself to a classmate, Deborah Ramirez, causing her to touch him without consent, during an alcohol-fueled Yale University party a few years later.

The White House had no immediate comment. Gratuitously adding another "he said" to what would inevitably become a "he-said-she-said" controversy makes no sense if you're trying to craft a good lie. Which may explain why Ford can't recall the time and place of the party at which the attack allegedly occurred, how she got home and so forth.

Charles Grassley, the top Republican on the committee, emphasized that the scheduling was procedural and only for a "potential" vote "if we're ready". A Grassley spokesman later reiterated the hearing will go on as scheduled.

The true story here is that women find the strength to face their abusers even in the most unfair and unwelcoming of circumstances.

"These most recent allegations just don't have anything to do with Dr. Ford", Cornyn said.

Trump on Wednesday faulted Republicans for not pushing the nomination through the Senate, which must confirmation Supreme Court appointments, more quickly.
