Investors largely seemed to shrug off the additional costs associated with the wage increase on Tuesday. In the U.S., workers will receive $15 an hour from the start of November.

Amazon has more than 575,000 employees globally.

Amazon will pay all of its US employees a minimum of $15 an hour, more than double the federal minimum wage of $7.25.

Amazon workers in the United Kingdom are now paid £8 an hour, while the current minimum wage is £7.83 for employees aged over 25.

In past years, there was a two-tier system under which large employers that contributed toward individual medical benefits paid a lower minimum wage than those that did not. It will climb to $13 in July 2019. "In the USA, the average hourly wage for a full-time associate in our fulfillment centres, including cash, stock, and incentive bonuses, is over $US15/hour before overtime".

Democratic Senator Bernie Sanders has been vocal about low wages paid at US corporations and has proposed legislation, nicknamed the "Bezos Bill", aimed at making large corporations pay workers more.

"What Mr. Bezos has done today is not only enormously important for Amazon's hundreds of thousands of employees, it could well be a shot heard around the world", said Sanders in a statement. That's a negative 1.3 point differential over the first eight months of the year, compared to a 0.8 point drop from January to August 2017. That's the fastest annual gain since the Great Recession ended almost a decade ago. "I'm in favour of higher wages", he told reporters said. While their role in USA culture might be large, their share of the labor market is still fairly small.

Sanders said it's no secret he has been a critic of Bezos for his treatment of workers while at the same time being "the wealthiest person on Earth".

Avenatti says his client Julie Swetnick is 'telling the truth' about Kavanaugh
Asked about the FBI investigation on Saturday, President Trump told reporters he thought the probe was "going very well". It would be a risky precedent to deny Kavanaugh's appointment because of an unsubstantiated and unprovable allegation.

The company, which is worth around $1 trillion, has also been attacked by campaigners and governments over the amount of tax it pays. About 2,000 of those are in the Houston area, according to a company spokeswoman.

Earlier this year, the e-commerce behemoth disclosed that its employees were paid a median annual salary of $28,446.

The move follows pay raise plans from companies such as Target and Disney World, but none are moving quite as quickly as Amazon, which has faced criticism for conditions in its dozens of fulfillment centers nationwide.

Critics of the company's compensation practices have included Sen.

Sanders congratulated Bezos Tuesday for "doing exactly the right thing", and urged other companies to do the same.

Those gains came in the same year that a number of Amazon's employees were found to be relying on the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program - SNAP - which until recently was commonly called food stamps. The minimum wage grew by $3, from $8 to $11.

Target said that it has seen a better pool of applicants after its moves to hike hourly pay.

"This is really all about the future of our approach to pay for our employees and trying to lead on this issue overall", he said. The online giant is the country's second-largest private employer, behind Walmart.
